I work for a company that has a shop and a herd of cows at the owners residence 1 mile from the town limits of Swan River. I quite often drive out to check the cows in the morning before starting work and have shot a pile of coyotes from the location over the years. The other morning when the owner checked his cows he found this 1000ld bred cow with it's throat tore right out. Being as it died where he shreds hay for the herd it was tough to find tracks but as we looked around we found these feline tracks. We called DNR but the officer who came out said he did not even know what a cougar track looked like. I think I will be sitting out in a blind for the next couple evenings and see if this cat shows back up.

I'm surprised it didn't eat more of the cow, rather than just killing it. Perhaps it was spooked before it was finished.

cat usually opens up the belly through the short ribs..they will pull aside the the guts and lap up the blood in the cavity..they don't eat out the neck like that...least initially.

Doesn't look like a cougar kill to me either, plus I don't think that is a cougar track.

Swan River, That's my home town, I spent the first 50+ years of my life there. I still return there for work from mid may till early November. Anyways, being an avid hunter there, I've seen a few cougars in the local area, a couple of them were seen crossing the road in front of me while driving. I've never seen a kill site so can't comment on the pic. I do know they are in the area.

We do have 4 trail cams set up now so we will see what comes by. I know the pic of the foot print is not the best but it is hard to find a good track at a kill site that has over 100+ animals walking around feeding for months. I have a few other pics of the tracks and the good ones we found no claw makes are present. This wasn't the work of a K-9 so either feline aliens or a cougar. The cougars will be around as there is a huge number of deer hanging out on the edge of town and almost none in the farm lands.

Cougars don't technically exist in Manitoba, so I would queestion the legality of shooting one. Not so much from a legal standpoint but from a bragging about it on an internet forumn

fairly sure they are a protected specie and even a farmer cannot kill it for herd protection.

my understanding is NR will compensate for loss.

I'm originally from Swan River area as well, and I have also observed cougars, mostly in the Nelson... but a few 4 legged ones in the woods. I have also seen them around Oak Lake / Souris area, a buddy saw one in Spruce woods, and I had fresh cougar tracks over ours while moose hunting near Leaf Rapids 2 years ago. I believe Cougars are making a very prevalent resurgence in the province.

According to Natural resources they do not exist in Manitoba, so much so that they do not even mention them in the hunting regs, that is not to say there is none just that the legality of shooting them under anything but the 3 S's might be a bad idea
