Winchester Pre-64 Stock repair

Hey guys, Got my 1st pre 64 today

will refinishing my stock decrease the value at all ? or should I just buy a replacement stock ?

They are a bunch of scratches I want to get out. Then a dozen coat of linseed oil applied with 0000 steel wool until it shines like glass.

The photo isn't that great but it looks to be in above-average shape for a pre-64 and appears to be all-original. Refinishing it will definitely decrease the value if you wish to resell it. If it were me I'd just use it the way it is...looks like a nice rifle.

Yeah that what I figured. Just like a milsurp I guess, dont touch it and use it as-is.

IMHO, a pre-'64 30-30 94 carbine is hardly a "collector " ... but from the photos certainly looks to be a nice shooter.

I wouldn't hesitate to re-finish the stock in a nice oil finish. I prefer Tru-oil, with Boiled Linseed Oil after, and a more low lustre finish.
If that takes a few $$ off the re-sale price, so be it ... but I'm not in any hurry to sell my shooters anyway. I'd rather have the gun
finished the way I want it !!!

I would just leave it as is and think of the scratches as character lines. Unless it's been drilled and tapped or bubba'd in some other way.

Well last night while taking it apart for cleaning I found a crack on the stock. Sp I decided to fix it today. Only have 5 coats of linseed oil on so far ... Couple more this weekend.

Its a bummer the walnut I got had white streaks in it, But it was too late for me to start over once I noticed it...
