Finn M91 barrel bulge

Is this advisable? Wouldn't that thin down the barrel walls too much? Aesthetically it might be workable but would you trust it? I'm just speculating here & don't really know if that would be a safety concern or not. I know I have a Parker Hale No1 MkIII with a sporterized turned down barrel and it's safe so???? Guess it all depends how much material would need skinned off. Would hate to blow the end of the barrel right off. Who knows ..... maybe I'm just being paranoid.

I wouldn't turn down the bulge but that's me. IF I were to try to repair that I would try rolling it back to nominal diameter.

I've learned a lot about some people, and a bit about Finn Mosins from this thread. Concerning the bulge, I'd leave it as is. It's a lot of work, and one could safely turn the barrel back to round and reblue, or somehow squeeze or roll it back to round and then counterbore again. However, the long counterbore is still evidence that there was a bulge, and the "repair" causes harm to what was an original rifle with what was almost certainly an arsenal repair.

I've seen long and short counterbores and no single bulge, so long counterbore assumes anything, not necessarily bulge IMO, there are other reasons for counterboring too. Just saying.

I have no plans to mess with it. If its original I wouldn't want to alter it. Even if it wasn't I would have no idea who I could even get to do a job like that. As for myself, I was lucky to get through junior high metal shop.

Few years back I almost bought French Berthier except closer inspection with bore light revealed bulge in the barrel, about 1/2 inch behind front sight.

How was it dealt with?Someone (many years back?) decided to cut the bulge, remove bullet and re-weld barrel.I could see gap inside barrel and interruption in rifling.

Barrel had some rust and dust inside, nothing serious so I think whoever owned it was smart enough to not to fire it.

I'm not sure what would have happened when shot but sure it wouldn't be pretty.Long counterbore is the only safe way to do it without cutting barrel short.

If counterbored after the bulge occurred, the metal would be THICKER at the bulge than in front or behind. Turning it down would just level it with the rest of the outside diameter. As for pressure concerns, look at a garand barrel. Pretty thin at the muzzle. I bet theres as much or more left in that M91 tube at the counterbore than a garand muzzle.
