A while ago I was asking about the accuracy potential of the M1903 action as a platform to build a precision/target rifle on. Originally, I was going to go with a .308. However, I have been intrigued by the 6.5x55 round, so I am thinking of doing the build in that caliber. I found a thread on the topic on another forum so I know its possible. The 1903 action is interesting and since its just a tweaked Mauser, it should make a good accurate rifle, i also like the looks and the features.
I have a line of a good condition stripped action. And Mystic might be able to get me a barrel. For a stock I was looking at some of the Boyds laminate Options. However, I am in need of pretty much everything else, such as a Bolt, bottom metal, ect. Worst case scenario is I have a 25-06 sporter I could cannibalize for parts but would rather not resort to that. I was looking at Numerich but some of their parts, such as bolts, state they cannot be exported.
Also, Does anyone know of a smith who knows the 1903 action quite well? I believe while the barrel i might be able to get will be threaded for the action, it will still require the forcing cone (Correct term?) and the extractor notch to be cut. Since I'm looking for best possible accuracy, i would like a smith that really knows the 1903 action. The bolt will also require a turning to open up the face as I believe the 6.5 base is a little larger then the 30-06.
Thanks, any info would be appreciated.
