I've been a member at a trap club for two years but only used the club for airguns. I shot my first round using a Baikal ij-18 I got from a friend. kicked like a mule lol. I then tried a browning xt I think and a rem 870 express. I really liked the 870 pump action. shouldered nice, not to heavy and I nailed 6 for 6.

I went to a store to buy an 870 express but was offered a beretta s55 over under. I'm doing research on the over under right now and I know the 870 is a field gun. just looking for sound advice. budget is the factor.

The S55 is also a field gun. I remember going with my dad when he bought his in the early 70's (still has it). The have double triggers, fixed chokes and chrome lined barrels so interchangeable chokes wouldn't be a cost effective venture. If I was looking for a shotgun for trap that doesn't break the bank, I would look for a lightly used Remington 870 Wingmaster before a new 870 Express.

There are very few if any spare parts available for the S55. If you can make or know someone that can make parts for you, then maybe. I looked at one some years back and I could have bought a trap model (S57, I think) along with a skeet barrel for that gun for $800. I did some research and contacted some knowledgeable Beretta folks and decided to pass. If you are going to shoot it much, you will need some parts.

thanks for all the responses so far. much appreciated.

as for the berreta not having parts available that's what I have read today. I'm still going to try it tomorrow but now that I joined here I'm sure I can find a solid platform. I really enjoyed the 870. My friend is joining me tomorrow and he is brining a browning bps but he hunts with it.

Although I am no longer a Remington shooter a TB or TC Wingmaster would be a good choice for sure. They point well and are known to be real clay crushers. There is a real nice one in the Shotguns EE currently. Price is a bit high IMO but it will give you an idea what a TC Wingmaster looks like.

now I'm getting the itch lol. how long does it take for me to get EE access? 5-10 long days?

Usually no more than 24-48 hours. Just send a join group request and wait for a Mod to approve the request. Don't get in a panic to buy right away and something will pop up when you least expect it and you'll have the gun you want at a price that you are comftorable with.
And always remember ...life is too short to shoot an ugly gun......so buy something you think is 'purty!!.:p

what a smart answer! ok I will be patient and get my butt kicked by the Baikal. :)

I never said indulge in self abuse until you find a good gun......remember my quote......"life is too short to shoot an ugly gun" ;) And if you truly want to help yourself don't shoot a kicking mule, you'll start developing bad habits such as flinching and then you'll have troubles!! :( Sounds to me like you had best buy fast then.......:dancingbanana:

let's hope it works out! I just declined the s55 this morning. I really like the pump actions and would like to wait out for one!

Good for you ... smart response !

x2 on the Remington 870TC Trap ... you won't be disapponted. If it's gone or unavailable, then it shouldn't be too hard to have a dealer order
in a new 870 Classic Trap for you. " Buy once, cry once " ... but at least you'll have a decent gun made for the purpose ! Better to wait a few weeks
( or month or two more ) for a few extra $$ and get what will serve you well for years !
