Richard this is more directed to you since my plans failed ( for the soldering LE Band)

I need a 1" section of the muzzle turned down from, 650 to .600.

Time to put a front sight band on this rifle, But at .650 its too big for most bands so needs to be turned down.

Yah, just take it to your local machine shop, no biggy.

I don't know of any machine shops licensed to work on firearms... and a rifle barrel with the action attached is a firearm.

Thats the problem.. Crap tones of machine shops, 3 I know ( ZERO Firearms ) have used them in the past, Friends at 2, had another work at another.

And only 1 machinest/gunsmith in NS I know of and 10mins job will take 4 months.

I suspect there's a little more to it than just a quick turning job. I'd want to size the band for a good press fit for starters. Ideally that would be a light reamer cut in the band if it's not smooth and round enough then sizing the position on the barrel. And finally after checking for square to drill and pin the band so it can't shift. All this is not a 10 minute job any longer.

Or do I not understand what is being done? It wouldn't be the first time I leaped to conclusions. It's one of my favourite exercises... :d

Well it all comes down to trying to find a band I want to use. Looking at 1895 Mauser because its sorta like the mosin. but bit bigger and non tapered. I wasn't trying to be fancy or blend it, All I kinda was thinking is getting it turned down for the ID of the band. Unitizing the pre drilled tapped hole on top to secure it and call it a day.

If the band is good and you won't be pitching it out of Hercs or helicopters then pinning the front to the barrel should not be required. Loctite or epoxy will fix any problem encountered.

I must add that the headstock on my lathe is quite long, over 32". What I do is to add an extension to the barrel to get to the outboard spider. This is okay for the common threads but for anything that I don't do every day I have to make what I need to get to the spider. Eventually I will have everything I need having encountered al the different threads etc. It will only take years.

I like the idea of a bit of stud and bearing mount. And yeah that along with a snug but not overly heavy press fit would do nicely. Pinning would likely be a bit of overkill on second thought.

Mauser front sight bands/bases use solder and screw to secure them to barrels. Screw would act like the pin/setscrew. Just tired of reddots and such on this rifle. Just need someone to sell me a band/base I cannot find any anywheres in stock. Without stealing one off my K98.

If I get the band I can mock up some drawings to you.

You know anybody in the gun shop on base? Assuming you're still in The Queen's Service. Good bunch of guys with not a lot to do, when I was in, long ago.
Machining runs over $100 per hour and the shop needs a firearms business licence.

When I left they were cracking down HARD on Rabbits. I couldnt take a piss without the CSM following me, since My shop was the worst ( Small engines) And honestly I would NOT risk bringing in a firearm.
