.17hmr shell split

We had many splits with Winchester ammo... it didn't seem to harm the accuracy much... but switching to Hornady cured the splits and accuracy was better also.

This is quite common when using Winchester ammunition in Savage rifles, yet I fired hundreds of the Winchester loads in my Cooper with no such issues. The Winchester loads are actually the most accurate load in my Cooper.

Not just Savage rifles... Winchester ammo split in the chambers of CZ and Browning rifles also... Hornady was good to go in all of them.

Had the same thing with 20 grain winchesters. Out of 2 boxes had around 20 splits very frustrating. Never had any issues with any other brand.

I've seen two kinds of Winchester have this problem in a marlin. Cci had no issues. If the brass is all made in the same factory than the Winchester brass must be from the reject pile ;)

LIke has been mentioned many times its the ammo. And it does it in nearly all 17's my Sako and Annie had the same issue with this winchester. The sako was sent off to Winchester and another smith for inspection at winchester's cost, and there was no damage to the chamber, I had a lot of this ammo and sent it to winchester and they sent me coupons 150% of the value of the ammo I sent in.

Its a very well known problem with Winchester 17hmr. If you take it up with Winchester (Olin) they make it right.

as far as I understand from reading other forums all 17 hmr brass is made at the cci plant, does anyone elses fail to extract when this occurs? mine does

For me, only once. (winchester) If the crack is only on the case neck or a bit of the shoulder it will eject just fine, any further down and it's trouble.

this is good to know, I remember 1 batch was so frustrating to shoot, almost every rd, stuck in the chamber, changed batches and every third it happened, I think I have got about 6 more boxes of that crap still, happy to hear its not the gun if it happens on that many different guns, yet another strike on win rimfire ammo.
