Good day folk please forgive me if this question has been asked and I know i'm gonna hear alot of "its all about shot placement!" But would you use a 338 Federal using a 200gr Accubonds on grizzly?

I assume you mean to hunt grizzly, not as grizzly defense... A Fed would do it... but why? Personally I would take more gun.

to the OP:

yes, if I had the rifle already sure, the 338 federal is under rated for it's energy, it's comparable or better then the 30-06, but not to as far out as the ought six, if I was buying a rifle that I was going to use for grizz it would be bigger as mentioned above, nothing wrong with the nosler and that cartridge that is an excellent combination and should be fine, but I'd look at the 9.3x62, 358 norma, 375 something or another if I was buying a rifle to be used for grizzly hunting.

There was a old native guy from bella bella who is said to have killed 11 grizzlies with a 22. LR many people claim to have seen the skulls. I know people who have taken them with 270 win (150 grain) and I would taken one with my 6.5x55 (139 grain) at a distance of 100 yards to 200 yards. the 338 has lots then some but if you shoot it in the ass its going to come at you. It Is All Shot Placement.

Ahh, the old grizzly with a .22 story....

OP, if you are buying a rifle, I'd be leaning toward a .338 WM or .340 WBY.

The 338 fed is certainly underrated. It hits a lot harder than most people would think. If it was me for hunting Grizz I would look at using partition bullets in a 210 or 225 grain... I have seen a few accubombs fail, and although it would most likely be ok in the federal I would stick with old faithful trusted bullets.

If you would hunt grizzly with a 30-06, you will be comfortable with a 338 Fed.

Though I've never shot a grizz... I would be comfortable agreeing with that one ;)
I own a 338fed, haven't fielded it yet... But I also have a .338WM and would be more comfortable pokin a grizz with that hehehe

This ^^ Not to mention the piles of grizz taken with 30-30's & .303's over the years. One does not need an uber rifle to bag a big bear, but because of hype & scary stories about bear hunts many folks feel a big-ass cannon is the best medicine.

The .338 Federal is plenty capable for the job inside of 200 yds. in experienced hands.

Cartridge is just fine, I'd personally be happier with a bullet like a partition or a TSX, but an accubond should work fine at .338 fed velocity. Expect a lot more people from places with no grizzlies to tell you why it won't work though. Where are you hoping to go grizzly hunting?

I'm thinking this post is a joke???

The grizzly with a .22 LR story is that ONE big bear was shot by a native WOMAN, her name was BELLA.

Not many bears shot by a native man "from" Bella Bella...

I have shot a grizzly and I would be using something with more horse power, if you are buying a rifle for the hunt look at something in the 338, 358, 375. Trust me you don't want to under estimate these big bears they can soak up a lot of energy. My bear was shot at 153 yards with a 250gr nosler partition out of a 358sta. It did the job very nicely.

Well the reason I ask is because I have the opportunity to buy a 338 federal and seeing as it weighs quite a bit less then my 375 ruger and was thinking carrying in the mountains might be a little more pleasant :)

I'm sure that hundreds of bears, black and grizzly- have been shot by men from Bella Bella. Big Grizzlies around there, and it's an isolated area so shooting what gun you have on hand is/was probably prevalent.
