1 mile shot with M1903A4 Springfield sniper variant with M84 scope - .30-06

This looks like an 04A4 clone built up on an 03A3 action. It has a repro Chinese scope and mount, a different bolt handle and a Smith-Corona made bolt shroud. We see it go bang, but nothing else.

It's a JRA 1903A4 with a new Criterion barrel... JP.

Hathcock used a 30'06 in Vietnam, but I don't know what his longest hit was....I know at one point he mounted a scope on a 50 cal Browning and was getting some longer range tags...lol

there was his MA2 2,286 m shot but the one I love the most was his 800 yard shot from the middle of the field that killed that officer and they thought he was in the tree line so the started shooting there and ran past him...

That proves my idea that not only not being where people think you are going to be but not noticed at all where you are is a good thing.

Send this in to Mythbusters, they can make a Hitler doll and hire a sniper to have a crack at it.

That is not at all correct :). A half mile is not that far. I can see a person standing at that distance without a scope. I shoot that distance with black powder and front and rear appertures, or sometimes with a 6x scope with a 3/4 tube.

Old rifles work better than many of today's shooters think. You don't need modern technology to shoot or see that far. You only need a stable bullet and wind doping ability. Accuracy has significantly improved in the last 50 years, but the old stuff isn't quite as bad as you think.

However that would likely be a very low probability shot :). But hey, it's Hollywood.

Chris.

Maybe we should get into a discussion of Tom Selleck's long range black powder shooting skills in "Quigley Down Under".;)

All this technical gob·ble·dy·gook and ya'll are forgetting the most crucial element of the equation: Jesus.
He has Jesus on his side, thus, the shot is always possible. :) I kid, I kid.

The Quigley Down Under stuff was pretty Hollywood :). I shoot a couple of .45-110's with paper patched bullets much like the rifle in the movie. They are pretty accurate and have no trouble at long range, but not quite like in the movie :). There was a lot that was wrong with the shooting in that movie. But it did sell a lot of rifles. The company that built the rifles for that movie ( Shiloh Sharps ) had a five year backlog after it came out. Now the backlog is just about 18 months.

Chris.

Im watching Saving Private Ryan. One of my favorite movies. However, just now the sniper guy said if he was within one mile of Adolf Hitler he could end the war with one shot. Would such a shot be possible with the rifle he is using? 1 Mile is 1760 yards, thats a hard shot with todays rifles.

Is this hollywood bull####. I dont know much about WW2 rifles.

Yes, it COULD be done, as there are people that shoot with Irons out to a 100 yards, so, a 2.2 Layman Alaskan will help a little. That isn't to say that it won't take a your whole magazine (5 rounds), cloth bandoleer (60 rounds in sprinfield stripper clips), Ammo web Springfield Garand belt (10 pockets with 2 strippers to a pocket = 100 rounds), or even an ammo can (250 rounds in cloth or steel link).

That said, during the Korean War, the Marine snipers armed with 1903A1 Springfields with 8x (7.8X actually) Unertl scopes made a lot of 1000 kill shots on enemy combatants.

I imagine though, for 1700 yard shot, across level ground, your rifle would be aimed at 10 degree angle or more and the bullet would be coming in at about, oh 70-80 degrees. Can you say HARD RAIN?
