Am I the only one that carries a honing steel with me? Maybe you should too

I've talked to a few guys and they looked at me like I was crazy when I told them I was looking at getting a leather sheath made for a honing steel. Is there anyone out there that carries a honing steel on them? If not you guys might want to reconsider. An edge will last much longer if regularly honed. Especially after skinning and regular camp chores. I've noticed a big difference on edge life span. You guys can try it out for yourselves. If you use your knife often in the field , hone it once in a while. You'll notice a difference.
I should maybe clarify "carrying a honing steel" out in the field rather then edc

I carry one of the old ceramic tubes from the old knob and tube wiring installs in my vest. About 3-4 inches long and would put an edge on just about anything and will ride in your pocket if need be.
 
I bought a little one years ago that I slide in to the sheath beside my Buck and when I was in Europe I found another for another knife I carry in my back pack.
 
I have a folding 6 inch double sided diamond hone which is carried in the day pack with 3 different knives. also have an oil stone and a small water wet stone in the pack as well
 
I have a butcher's steel that I carry in my pack with my game bags, meat saw, string, baby wipes, headlamp, etc.

You're smart, not crazy.
 
I worked in a meat shop for a while and got the hang of using one. I don't take one hunting but I always have one with me for the skinning to touch up the knife if it dulls.
 
The buck pen style one (#97070-C), was free so it gets some mileage.
As does thiers issued's paddle strop.
Slightly different technique/purpose, but same idea - clean cuts are better.

X2 always carry an olfa and extra blades now . Plus my Gerber fixed blade.

its called an eze lap diamond m and it works great. I also carry a small piece of an old leather belt folded in half and charged with stropping compound to touch up in the field. I find that a knife doesn't often need an actual honing all the time, It just needs to have the edge re-aligned by a steel or a strop. Honing or sharpening removes metal and steeling or stropping doesn't.

that's nice to know. the buddy that gave it to me called it a "diamond stick" lol

my favorite steel is just smooth stainless. it works good for standing an edge back up.
 
Tiny diamond impregnated steel that stows inside it's own reversible brass handle. Can't remember the brand name for the life of me.....but it'll improve an edge that's cut up just a little too much big game in a pinch.
