Is it possible to mount a Harris bipod to a Springfield M1A in the black synthetic stock and if so how is this done? Was at a local shop today looking at one and looked like there were 2 screws holding a sling mount loop, but it wasn't not the normal sling / bipod stud.

Very close to picking one of these up, so if there is anything else I should know please feel free to post as well. I have seen the thread that for Springfield warrant, and willing to accept that risk.

heres what "I" did.

get a harris AR bipod adaptor.
cut a portion off of the front tab.
fit it into the water drain hole near the front of the handguard.

once you verify it fits well and doesnt rub the gas tube, jb weld it in place

enjoy

I've done 4- there's STICKIES on how to do this on here- basically , you drill out one of the rivets on the front sling swivel and replace it with with a sling stud and t- nut- you jb that in place or use 5 minute epoxy- then you mount the harris to the sling stud in the normal fashion

There's a hole underneath the stock where a front swing swivel stud would normally be. Find it, then buy one of these:

Remove the stock, place the swing swivel in the hole and tighten it up. Re-attach stock.

Now you have the sling mount to attach your Harris bi-pod to as per normal.

Is that a water drain hole or a gas relief port?

From the technical video (produced by the US Army in the 60s) that hole is a vent hole for gases escaping from the gas block which prevents too much gas from being in the system. I don't think it is a good idea to plug the hole. Just my 2 cents.

that's a debate that's been going on here since adam was a boy- is it a drain hole for water or a gas relief hole-the nomenclature or parts diagram lists it out as a DRAIN hole- the fact that it happens to line up with the gas system is a COINCIDENCE- however , 1) I've had a stock split when a head let go that might not have happened had the drain hole not been plugged with a sling stud- and that cost me a mag as well- 2 why CHANCE IT?- most of us have the ways and means to drill a rivet out and mounting it further back ( in the rivet hole) allows for the use of a longer bipod as well as more near the centre of gravity

as a hacker/blaster here's my opinion, regardless of what its called, being a gas releif hole is a non issue. Since there is like a 2x2x6inch long space there for gasses to vent into in the handguard area, that area isnt under pressure.
again, personal opinion, not an expert on anything.

and i dont have the tools/patience to drill out rivets etc.
