New to the .40 cal S&W (M&P) and want to get going on some hand loads. I have lots of brass, plenty of peas and primers. Powder I have Red Dot, Blue Dot and IMR 4227. I may have a line on some SR4756 as well.

Any experiences out there that folks would be willing to share would be awesome!

Cheers!

What pistol? What bullet? weight? cast, plated or jacketed? What you trying to do? plink? make a Power factor?

Of the powder you have on hand, Red Dot would be the one I would try with cast bullets. Start with 3.0 to 4.0gr

With jacketed bullets I would use the 4756. 6 to 7 gr.

Your red dot will work buts it's dirty. I personally prefer a slower powder like 800x or sr7625 that makes a mess if you accidentally double charge. Titegroup, 700x, red dot and other fast powders will allow a double charge without any spillage.

Go with the 4756.

In a pinch I've used Long shot, Autocomp, 231, WST and SR 7625. I was using Titegroup a fair bit too. I haven't made much 40sw for a while as I stocked up and made a couple of thou right before I sold my G-22. Still have a 40sw JR Carbine, but shoot less from that than I used to from the G-22.

It's a 40 cal Smith and Wesson M&P. I have 175 and 180 grain jacketed bullets, maybe 200 or so for now.

Mainly plinking.

Two of those powders are Hodgdon. Go to the Hodgdon web site and click on the link to their online reloading data center. I'm pretty sure you'll find that the 4227 isn't a listed choice for that size of round. It's more the sort of thing used in magnum revolver cartridges.

I've used Blue Dot behind 180g jacketed bullets. I couldn't find any other powder at the time. Worked good and burned well once i got up to medium loads. Found around 7.1g was the most accurate in my M&P.
