Greetings, up to now I have been shooting polymer pistols and I recently got a 1911 Smith&Wesson Pro.
When I grip the 1911 as I do my polymers the grip safety does not always fully engage. Whit the polymers it seems I developed a habit or putting my right hand thumb way high to let more space for my weak hand to contact the pistol. I usually rest my right hand thumb over the left hand's.
So with the 1911 I feel I have to wrap my thumb lower on the grip, thus creating more pressure on the grip safety. But this limits the space I have to put my weak hand on the grip. If I use the same "polymer grip", I can "ride the safety" with my thumb.
So what is the best philosophy to adopt here? I grab the pistol as best I can single handed and the weak hand has to manage with the space left? Or it's ok to modify my strong hand grip to accommodate the weak hand? That would mean having two methods of grabbing the grip.
Thanks you, Nic
