S&W M&P Pro Core Review and Comments

I bought one from IRunGuns at Christmas and I would have received it in less than a week, except for CanPar taking it on an extra 3,000 mile journey before coming back to Winnipeg.

Things I like about it:

It fits my medium hands reasonably well, with a very good trigger position.
The larger post front sight.
More Ambi than some.
How light it is. I thought that might affect recoil, but I don't really notice it.
It has the CORE cut on the slide for an optic and you can co-witness the sights. The front blade is still useful to help acquire the dot on target.
It is accurate.
The relatively short trigger reset.
It is reliable and goes bang every time you pull the trigger.

Things I don't like about it:

The gritty trigger.
The grips.
The wide trigger guard. Holster fitment issues. Although this was not a problem using the CR Speed style holster.
The lack of good information available, even on the S&W forum.

I put the Hogue grips on it and I like it better than the stock grips, but I am still looking for something with some more bite for action shooting. Maybe the original grips with some sand and glue will eventually make their way back onto the gun. I searched the net for trigger fixes, and finally decided the original parts were going to be OK, with a bit of tweaking. With the striker fire, you are fairly limited to what you can do and still run in Production class, since you need a 5 lb trigger for the first pull.

The best bang for the buck, as it is an easy fix is, is to remove the striker block and do 2 things; ensure there are no burrs in the hole of the slide, and grind and polish a slightly different profile on it striker block. Just by doing this the trigger is just above 5 lbs in my gun and the gritty feel is gone!. If I were to work on the sear, it would drop another 1-3 lbs, but that would force me to change classes. I guess running with the optic would do the same.

This is not my striker block photo, but the one in the PDF. I just stuck mine in a drill and ran it against a fine stone to get the shape and then used 400 grit and 800 grit paper to clean it up. I then used SS polishing compound to make it sparkle.

Here is the link to the PDF for the complete trigger job with original parts. M&Ptriggerjob.pdf

If the link gets removed, just search M&P Trigger Job pdf.

For those with the older Pro guns, the removal of the rear sight gives you access to the Striker Blocker. For those with the newer Pro CORE, the access is under the Optic or the cover plate. There was a lot of debate on what tool is needed to remove the cover, with varying answers resulting in damaged screws. For the CORE models you need a very good quality 0.050" hex tool. 1.3mm will not work! The tool I bought was very accurate, pricier than I thought it would be, and fit perfectly. Needless to say, no play is very important to prevent stripping the cap.

If I decide to make this a poor man's open gun, I will finish the complete trigger job, have the barrel and slide Magna-ported (quad) and perhaps mount a larger red-dot.

it is my favorite pistol that i own.
i love the extra high co-witness sites - its taking me some time to get use to the Deltapoint red dot on a pistol.

i picked mine up when they first came out and i still love it today.
i am interested to see if the new version with the ported slide and barrel would be like to shoot in comparison.

there must be something a little off with me, i dont mind the triggers on the M&P's.

What games consider that gun a production gun?

Take off the optic and it is Production IPSC and SSP IDPA.

Unfortunately, the trigger pull of the M&P pro is just under 5 lbs.

Mine and another I tested were closer to 6 lbs. After much dry firing, 1,000+ rounds through it, and my blocker grind (which had little affect on weight except for feel), it is still about 5.5 lbs, which is quite reasonable. Having a 2.5 lb trigger would be great, but I suspect Smith & Wesson are very aware of the trigger pull requirements for IPSC Production. I suspect the Performance Centre version with porting will have a very light trigger. From what I have read, with the slide cuts in place there will be a barrel option (ported or non-ported) that will allow the gun to run in either Open or Standard, as well as ESP.

Just a little update. The gun sat for a while waiting for a new sight and me playing with my other guns.

The Burris sight glass started to separate, so I sent it back for repair. It took almost 4 month to get it back because the Burris did not send my correct address to the Canadian distributor! Of course, they didn't call or email me to ask for it before or after it was returned to sender.

I wanted to keep the gun "Production" legal (or close to it) and be completely happy with the trigger. By far, the striker block reshaping had the greatest effect, but the sear polishing was a good addition. I also removed a small amount from the rear edge of the sear. This took the trigger pull down to just over 4 lbs and made it a bit more crisp. The trigger is now quite good, except for the reset and length of pull with the factory trigger.

Just to be completely clear, the newer Pros and Cores have the performance sear. Very little work can be done to this sear or you will wreck it! DO NOT REMOVE any material from the top side of the sear as described in the Burwell Trigger Job. You can do what I said above. The slide does have some vertical movement on the rails and it can lift enough to release the firing pin catch. I removed about 0.012" and that was too much - I didn't measure the slack when I took my initial measurement, I just used the marking on the sear where the firing pin catch sat. The mark showed there was the potential for material removal as indicated in the Trigger Job instructions, but the performance sear is already smaller than the regular M&P sear. My thinking was to take off about 0.010" as a first cut and try it. It worked perfectly until I lifted the slide - click! Again, it is tough to buy parts in Canada! A bit of welding, a bit of grinding, and a bit of hardening and it is all better again.

Since I have bigger plans for this gun and wanted a better trigger, I recently ordered the Apex FSS trigger kit from IRG. I also purchased a threaded KKM barrel and compensator from Carver Customs. Unfortunately KKM sent 40 cal barrels in the 9mm box (first mistake). Carver didn't check it before they shipped it to I Run Guns for export (second mistake). IRG didn't check it before export either (third mistake). Now I have a threaded match grade 40SW barrel waiting to be sold locally or shipped back to the USA to get the correct one reshipped - darn ITAR rules!!! So if anyone is looking for a 5" M&P 40SW barrel, have a look in the E&E section. My new barrel in 9mm should show up in February!

This is by far my favorite auto in my safe. If you do not like the factory trigger I would strongly suggest the Apex forward set sear and trigger kit. I put the kit with the aluminum trigger in and all I can say is wow! It eliminates the excessive take up, over travel and gives a clean crisp break. The kit with it's trigger return spring gave me a 4.25 lb pull. I put the factory S&W trigger return spring in and that gave me a consistent 3 lb pull. Perfect in my humble opinion. This one also has the Apex RAM and a Storm Lake 9mm conversion barrel in it.

i am presently looking for a V Comp version. I would prefer the 4.25" barrel to run an optic with but it is what it is. I have the Apex trigger group on a 40 PRO. I can switch it with any of my other uppers and the lower still works. I do like the 40 for ESP. Running a 40 with 180 gr bullets at 130 PF is like shooting a .22.

IRG did a great job in sending out the Apex FSS Trigger kit in a timely manner; it came about 1 month earlier than expected! It arrived today and was installed this evening. I didn't have to adjust the trigger loop from the stock position and the trigger pull is 2 lbs 9.5 oz with the pieces I used from the kit and the original gun.

I installed the Apex USB, but then put back my previously dome ground USB as mine was rounder, had less resistance, and a better feel. I did use the Apex USB spring as it is slightly shorter and softer. The dimensions appear to be similar on the Apex and Core USB.

For the selection of the trigger spring, I read that the original Core spring would lower the trigger pull compared to the 2 springs that came with the kit. The kit spring is suppose to give just under 4 lbs and I ended up with 2.6 lbs.

The Forward Set Sear is similar to the S&W Performance sear, but the pull is slightly more forward and it definitely created less trigger weight. With the pronounced lip on the back of the sear, with a little trimming the pull would get even lighter if one wanted to experiment. It feels fine right now, so I doubt I will do any more work to it.

The KKM 5" threaded barrel (replacement), extended mag release, and a SS magwell should be in Canada in Early February. I already have the 4 port compensator and spring kit from the first shipment. I still need to fabricate a slide-racker to attach to the new aluminum slide end, and I have to modify the magazines, in particular the 10 round ones, to be able to go in and be removable with the big-mouth magwell.

The OEM barrel with a 1 - 10 twist will be more accurate in 9MM than the KKM using a 1 - 16 twist IMHO. Unless an aftermarket barrel requires fitting to your gun there is no reason to think it will be any more accurate than a stock S&W barrel. S&W has now gone to 1 - 10 twist barrels in all their 9MM guns. I only paid around $80 for my 1-10 barrel from S&W. Accuracy improved over the 1-18 twist.

The CORE with an Optic can be shot in the "Not for Competition" division in IDPA events. For club events I intend to get a CORE V Comp M&P when they become available up here. Should be a fun gun to shoot.

I would agree that it is quite accurate right now with the newer twist barrel, but I need the KKM barrel for the threads due to the compensator attachment and conversion to an Open gun. I will be shooting major power-factor. I had previously thought about just having the barrel magna-ported, but the logistics were not going to work. If it comes close to my STI open gun I will be happy. With the trigger job it is no longer eligible for Production or SSP, just limited and ESP with iron sights.
