happened upon 4 full buckets today, told me to give him a call later to get a price from him, the guy that usually buys it to make fishing weights hasn't been there for a while so it's piling up. I'm wanting to get into reloading and I know I don't need this much, I was just wondering if it's worth the trouble to pick it up and sit on it to pass it on to any locals that need any. Better that it goes to someone on here than into fishing :) your thoughts ?

Absolutly pick it up! You can always sell it on here without any issue for the right price.

I wouldn't pay more then 50-60 cents a pound for wheel weights pending the steel/zinc to lead ratio.

Once you start shooting cast bullets and learn how to do so accurately those four buckets of wheel weights will get used up pretty quickly. Sort it to get rid of the Zinc weights which can spoil you mix if there is enough of it. Then, melt the rest down into ingots. Cookie trays make great molds. The ingots take up a lot less space and are easier to melt later. If you're casting pistol bullets that will cast a lot of bullets but pistol shooters commonly shoot a lot of bullets downrange at an outing.

Don't throw the Zinc away. It makes fine bullets as well. They just seem to be more frangible. You can also cast them into fishing weights and sell them.

around Saskatoon they usually go for 15 to 20 dollars a pail, given at least 1/3rd are zinc or steel I get 30 to 40 pounds of ingots from them, we use a furnace and melt 10 pounds a time, with the temperature control only the lead melts, never considered saving zinc, anyway I shoot 45acp, when casting bullets I add some tin to the mix and flux, best guess is roughly 30 projectiles to the pound or 1000 to the pail,

not a bad deal, not a money maker if you consider the time it takes but better than watching the grass grow

thanks guys, Luke S, I'll let you know if I pick it up. I mostly don't want it to go into something else. The guy said that sometimes a guy will buy it when he builds up a drag car to use as ballast. Just looking to use a bit and make sure the rest goes to a good home, will keep you posted. thanks

Get all you can get your hands on and store it.

Sooner or later you will need it and chances of having entire load of usable lead are slim to none-some of this stuff will be zinc/iron etc

All that lead you will shoot faster than you think :)

thanks

Very rare down this way to find much lead in the buckets anymore. For years I used them for making lead shot but no more
Only time now I see any volume of lead is in the heavy duty truck shops who still use lead on some weights but that is going away also
Scrap price was all we ever paid for them
Cheers

Well that didn't work out like I thought, the guy wants .65 cents/lb even though the local scrap rate is .30/lb. He said well that's the price. I'll pass when it's twice the price. thanks for the input guys. Also , do I need to "pls remove" this thread or just leave it up?
thanks

plinking lead

Just scored 140lbs of wheel weights, all lead. So I figure after melting it and skimming out the steel clips I should have around 130lbs of lead, add a bit of tin and there you go, plenty to keep me casting in my spare time. My 45-70 is going to get some serious range plinking time. Averaging 20 pills per lb, this will keep me going for awhile. If anyone in the local area needs lead let me know, after refining it will be on the market for around 1.00 to 1.25 a lb dependant on how much time and tin I have to add in the process.

What's wrong with fishing? Me and dad used to make tons of jigs in the basement with the lead pot cooking away....
What were we talking about again?
