Hey guys looking for some input. I have been reloading for about ten years and this is a new one for me. I have always used Remington Primers in the past and as of recent all i was able to get was Winchester (large rifle and large rifle magnum). Anyways every odd firing probably 1 in 20 the primer leaks gas through a pinhole that's created right on the outer circumference of the primer. I googled it and seen there was a couple people having some problems. I have put these primers aside as it was starting to cause small pits the bolt face of my rifles. Came across some Rem LR Mag primers and so far so good again with my 300 win mag.

Some background: Have had this happen with two different lots WLR and WLRM that were purchased the same time.

At first i though maybe i missed a loose primer pocket or two so i took more care when priming by hand and discarded any brass that felt easier to seat primers in than others. Lapua brass for the 308 two times fired.

The loads are not high pressure, in fact they are closer to the min recommend powder level than the max in my 308 loads. Turns out that's where i was grouping the best. No flattened primers, sticky bolts or ejector marks(rem700)

I partial full length re-size so its not an excess headspace issue. Ballpark around 0.004-5" shorter than fired brass as per hornady headspace gauge.

I'm kinda at my wits end on this one, gonna load up some more (Winchester LR) but different lot number an see what happens. Below is a googled picture of what it looks like, I ended up throwing away the damaged brass so i wouldn't end up using it again. My brass did not show ejector marks like it looks in these pics though.

Wow, thanks guys that's kinda what i was figuring. In the meantime should I be able to use the Remington LR mag primers that i have, only start at the min charge and work up again? Gonna shop around for some new primers i guess, most places seem to only have the Winchester stuff on this side of Canada.

Have used CCI for the most part and never see a problem so don't see a need to change but agree with the above posts it looks like bad primers.

Fortunately, I have managed to miss any "bad" batches of these Winchester primers.

That being said, over the past 50+ years of reloading, I have seen this phenomenon in virtually all brands of primers I have used.

[Alcan LR, CIL 8½, CCI 200 & 250, Remington 9½, 9½M, 6½ & 7½, RWS LR & SR, Wolf LR, etc]

Hate it when it happens, since it always creates little divots in the boltface. grrr!

Regards, Dave.

Thanks for the input folks. I just pulled 30 rounds and changed with a differnt lot number of win primers. Any issues with this lot and they are all goin in the trash. In the meantime i found some cci large rifle primers at budget shooter and placed an order

Two burn marks on my Sako bolt face due to Winchester primers...2 different batches.
Only us cci or fed. from now on...tossed close to 400 Winchester primers after the second.

Primer leakage can be caused by shooting minimum pressure loads. When you have ignition pressure climbs to 55-60 000 psi. This pressure is forced against the primer cup as well as the bullet, the primer cup is designed to flair against the brass primer pocket and creates the seal. You can get gasses escaping if THAT SEAL is not tight enough.
enjoy.

Thanks but the gas excapes through a pin hole thats created in the edge if the primer cup. Wouldnt i see a ring around the primer if this were the case. My load is 39.7 grains of 3031 pushing a 178 amax. Min is 37.0 max is 40.6. If my math is correct i should be around 54-55k
