I've never done action shooting. How do I get a Black Badge to get started?

I'm assuming there's a course with live fire practice. The question is where? I'm just in the middle of becoming a member at the Grange Firearms Association near Toronto. They have a holster course, which they describe as a preliminary to getting a Black Badge. So where do I go and when are they?

Cancel the above. I found the IPSC website now. The question is, do they have anything that's not in Sudbury or Sault Ste. Marie?
 
Your best bet is to keep an eye on the calendar and contact the IPSC Ontario BB Training Coordinator as there should be more courses posted shortly.

Don't do the Grange holster course, it's only good for there. Better to get a black badge, as you can use it at any club or match.

IPSC Ontario calendar ftw. Make sure you check off ALL the clubs even if it involves a motel stay and be quick in replying to the e-mail you'll receive from the BB coordinator.
 
If you want to shoot IPSC then you need a black badge. If you want to shoot other types of action shooting like the non-IPSC Multigun matches in SW Ontario you don't need an IPSC black badge to play. Most clubs in this area that host multigun matches are fine with other holster qualifications like CDP, TDSA, etc. I can't speak for other clubs but if you did the holster qualification at The Grange or with the Team Hoser guys at Guelph you'd be more than welcome to shoot the multigun matches at The Galt Sportsmens Club.
 
Most "in house" holster courses mean absolutely nothing outside of the range that they're taught at; and some are downright unsafe (although I am NOT implying Grange's course is such). Any person can dress up as an instructor and teach a holster course; what you really need is an actual black badge course that will teach you what you need to know and do, and to do it safely. So save your money and spend it on practice ammo; when you're ready, sign up on the IPSC Ontario website for notifications as to when there is a BB course in your area.
 
If you have the time and the money, I would not gainsay a local holster course. You'll learn some basic stuff that will prepare you for the significantly more challenging Black Badge. Also, get a better idea about gear before committing to spend a bunch of money for IPSC.

Also, if the wait for BB course is long, by getting the holster course, you can practice at your local club while waiting.

I did the Grange's course, and did not find it a waste. I did BB a few months later.
 
It's going to cost you about $200 for a black badge course. It will be recognized world wide, for multiple shooting disciplines. With the grange holster course, you'll always have to question if you'll be welcome.

You can automatically be notified by email every time a new black badge course comes on. Wait for one at Silverdale with Alex. He should be posting one in the very near future, as it gets warmer.
 
You may wanna look into the OSTS pistol courses by the way. I think they also teach you how to safely/properly holster and unholster your pistol, plus I've heard many great reviews of their pistol skills development which will not only make your BB course easier, but it will also allow you to get more out of it. I'm still paying for my lack of handgun fundamentals when I took my BB course, but fortunately I've had good post-BB support from a bunch of friendly folk :)
