So I'm wondering... Where does one cartridge take you that the other doesn't?

I have both, and a pile of others, naturally.

Come on hunting season! These darn "vs." threads can only kill so much time.

I can't think of a situation where I would use one and no the other. My strictly personal choice is the 6.5x55.

6.5x55 -- Less recoil, longer action, excellent performance on all but largest game.
.308Win --a little more recoil [manageable just the same], shorter action, excellent performance on all but the largest game.

That's my take on it.... Yer gonna do fine with whichever you choose. I think it comes down to how much you like the rifle you're shooting.

I own a tack driver Remington 700 in 308 Varmint barrel wearing an AICS AX Chassis, 2k in this rifle so far. I find Remington to be ammo sensitive in my experience. I also have a 100 year old Swede M96 sporter wearing a 30 yr old Bushnell fixed 4x scope from Tradex that I have 350$ invested that shoots as accurate. I recommend the 6.5x55mm cartridge. the trajectory is almost identical to the 300 WinMag. Get yourself a Tikka T3 chambered in 6.5x55mm, you won't regret it. You can also get 156gr cartridges for larger game.

If I had the choice, this would be my order of preference, knowing that all 5 would get the job done, well:

1. 7x57 (substitute 7mm-08 if not reloading)
2. 6.5x55
3. 30-06 (a bit more recoil than I would like, otherwise, it would be number 1)
4. 308
5. 270

Just as an aside, a short action is not a game changer for me in a hunting rifle.

While the 308 win is a great target round it has been said "anybody that would hunt with a 308 would fornicate with sheep". It wasn't me that came up with that statement i just happen to agree with it. :nest:

I have both. A Parker Hale "Safari" .308 and a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight 6.5x55. I tend to pick the 6.5x55 because the Winchester is just prettier.

6.5x55 with 140gr Partition handloads for mice to moose. And a couple big cow elk.................Harold

Sheep are actually pretty good companions... not at all like the goat's the Swede's (6.5X55 users... not the nationality) prefer...
