My best iron sight group M1A

I just shot my best group ever and had to post about it! Working up a load for my M1A loaded, second group looked like this:


Couldn't believe it, tried it again and shot about 2moa.
Could this be due to the rifle heating up and spreading the group or maybe I was just excited and rushed it.
Can't wait to get out and try it again.
This was off a rock jr rest and rear bag btw.
 
Haha, I was just about to ##### at you saying 3 shots isn't a group. In fact I recommend 10. Regardless, what powder and bullets are you using? Have you checked out Reloading for the M14 by Zediker? Good info in that book. And my last bit complaining, I think for your load development, you should scope your rifle even though that's one awesome iron site's group. In general you'll be able to shoot more accuratley with the scope.
 
I gotta (respectfully) disagree with Gobc on this one...M14's were made to be shot on irons. Scope only for old eyes.
Good shooting, show us some 5 round groups, see if you can elude the curse of the 5th round flyer!

Nice shooting. It would be even better if you had a black rectangle to aim at, so you could hold a more precise elevation. When I aim, I leave about 1 inch of white showing under the black.

I have black rectangles cut out that I staple onto a back paper. That way I can keep re-using the aiming marks.

I'm not saying keep the scope on, i'm just saying use it for the duration of your load development to shoot more accurately. Once you have the best load, back to irons.
 
I want to throw a scope on, as you guys know the front post takes up most of the target, don't know how those guys do it at 600...
 
I have a USGI NM .062" front sight. It is tapered on the sides and top to give a reflection free crisp sight picture, and it is a lot skinnier than a standard front sight. Be warned; if you purchase a NOS piece it will probably have to be hand filed and lapped to your dovetail on the flash hider. Mine did.

I also have a NM Rear Sight with the hooded aperture. Smaller hole makes for more precise aiming, plus it adjusts 1/2MOA per click instead of 1 MOA. Again, a NOS aperture has to be hand lapped to the sight base.

I have been trying to get that rifle hitting properly for about 3 years. Turns out my front sight post was too short. Got a proper and higher front sight and now it is hitting where I want it to.

The other items in my collection are now going to get jealous or go through seperation anxiety because I am going to be spending a lot of time getting this one back up and running.

Does that make me a bad person:)

That is an encouraging group, but the proof is in how often it is repeatable. The components you are using are well proven for accuracy in a 7.62/.308. Iron sights will deliver MOA groups @ 100 yds with a consistent sight picture assuming that everything else is the same. I've used a black rectangle on a buff or white backer paper as a target for many moons. It works. Depending on the range orientation and time of day it is helpful for better target resolution to shoot on a sunny day with the sun at your back.....and make sure to blacken the aperture and front sight to eliminate shine. If you are planning to do your shooting with iron sights forget the scope as it quickly becomes a crutch and may well psych you out when you go back to the irons.

purple, thanks for the info! I haven't been able to repeat that kind of group but I'm very impressed with the rifle.
