The New, Non-restricted CZ 958

Cool = Yes, but I guess not cheap but probably better than the CSA rifles. Too bad the original 858's got so messed up :( I liked the original military look - but the new design is more practical - especially for what most people use them for.

Howdy.

I streamlined the legal talk for the TFB crowd. Most of their readers are American and goggle at the idea of classifying things other than "machine gun."

The legal side pulled from my post in Wolverine's forum:

As of writing, and to the best of my knowledge, the Cz958 has yet to receive an FRT after at least seven months of inspection. Of course, I cannot say for certain, because that database is not available to the public, and the lab is not exactly a "call and chat" operation.

Now before some kind loving and concerned CGN members overheat their keyboards in a race to tell me how bad and wrong I was to take this gun outdoors and shoot it, lets do a little thought experiment together...

1. We can recognize that this rifle is based of the Sa.58 platform. Whether you call it a Cz858, Vz58, FSN, Sa.58 etc, I can see the shared gas system, magazines etc.

2. We can look in at the Criminal Code's prohibited weapons order, and see that none of the models and names above are listed. So this rifle isn't 12(4) or 12(5)

3. We can run a dowel down the barrel, and measure where it hits the bolt face. This rifle has a full 19 inch barrel. So I know it is not restricted due to barrel length.

4. We can hold the trigger down, and watch as only one round is fired. We know that this is not an a 12(2) automatic rifle.

5. Now the definition of 12(3) converted automatics has been a problem in the past. I have only a base level understanding of automatic fire, but I know that it requires an extra sear and an extra disconnecter in my trigger pack, and an extra setting on my safety. I can see that my safety only has two settings, stop and go. I can also see that the areas where one might try to fit an additional sear and disconnecter are scalloped away. So even if I had the parts, had the will, and had the machining skill to reshape the receiver to accept those components, I would just end up putting holes in the gun.

Now here's the kicker...

"Firearms are classified under the Criminal Code and its supporting regulations. As such the RCMP does not have the authority to classify firearms. However, in order to fulfill its statutory role of registering firearms, the RCMP must form an opinion as to the classification of a firearm if the classification is not explicitly set out in the Criminal Code and its supporting regulations. This expert technical opinion is captured in the FRT."

-RCMP Briefing Note to Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney

The firearm I was given met all the requirements laid out in the criminal code to be non-restricted.

So whats keeping Wolverine from importing en masse?

Canadian Border Services does refer to the FRT when processing the import of firearms. They can hold a shipment and request that technical opinion, even though these rifles do not need to be registered. As a result, we & Wolverine are kept waiting while the RCMP takes months doing what took me 5 minutes.

Considering CZ left us(Canadian gun owners) holding the bag with the whole CZ858 fiasco why would anyone even be interested in anything made by CZ? I was looking into their bolt actions but not after the 858.

Why would it be CZ's place to help us when it is our Government who screwed us? They are just as much victims of the RCMP thugs as we are.

They could have used Receivers that were not converted full auto's, instead they welded full auto receivers to save money and by doing so broke Canadian law. They sold many Canadian rifles that they knew were illegal for us to posses.

All the re-cylced receivers have the same welding..... some were never previously assembled and that's what makes them acceptable under are dumb laws.
The ones that were assembled and then broken down and re-purposed are the ones that fail under our law even though they are physically identical.

Right, in any event the manufacturer should step forward and fix the issue. It should be up to them to ensure their product for export meets Canadian laws, not the end users who have no idea what receiver was or wasn't used in the assembly of the firearm.

EDIT: You also have the best sig ever.

Our governments laws are b.s. on the converted auto subject. BUT the law was in effect well before a single 858 was brought into this country. Why would an importer bringing in 10000 units from a foreign country and not have a contract stating that no converted fully automatic receivers be used? Doesn't take a genius to make up a contract to prevent this from happening. Someone tell me why an importer wouldn't request- no fullyautomatic assembled/dissembled receivers to be used?

It will be interesting to see if the Conservatives do something about it before elections... like they said. Although they did liquidate the registry process for us.... It would be be nice to see the conservatives use their majority as a chance to provide alittle more freedom to the law abiding gun owners of Canada.

Their receivers had a latent defect. They were converted auto which is prohibited.

The importer and the manufacturer are legally responsible (and they know it too well, (at least in QC)).

Why is that so hard to understand ?

Is that little piece of metal on the front of the rail supposed to be a rear sight?
Hard to say? Doesn't look like anything haha
