I haven't had the time to get out nearly as much as I would like this winter, but the few times I have been out haven't been successful.
Tonight, I thought I'd go for a walk on a piece of land I purchased this winter, I've been seeing lots of sign there every time I've been there, just haven't been there to call yet.
Evening was lining up to be a good one, seen some whitetails, a coyote and a mink on the drive to the property.
Then it started going down hill, stopped at 2 trail cameras on the walk in, one doesn't seem to be working and the other the batteries were dead. Then pulled out my FoxPro to find the dial had been bumped on in my pack and the battery was dead. I guess this is why you always carry a mouth call as well.
Found my spot overlooking several fields, and called for 30 seconds or so and paused. Scanned the area and caught movement high on a ridge about 250 yards away. Gave a few more short calls and out trots a red fox. I watched him come for a ways, called quietly a few more time to bring her into about 125 yards.
I squeezed one shot off from my 6PPC, and folded her up.
First varmint kill of the year, first kill for this PPC.
Sako 6mmPPC Sporter, Leupold 4.5-14x40. Photo of the field shows the ridge where he came from, top of the hill, made his way halfway down before I shot.
58gr VMax makes a mess of a head shot. There was pieces and parts in a 30 foot circle around the downed fox.
