Working on a simple shorty shotgun project for a neighbor farmer of mine.

Simply put a CanadaAmmo 12.5" barrel on a used Wingmaster so far.

Wondering how others have gone about installing sights on the gun. Of course the barrel has a tall blade front on it designed to work with the rear ghost ring on the Grizzly, but my stock Wingmaster will need something added.

Been thinking of just drilling and tapping the receiver to install a generic picatinny rail, then any combination of ghost ring and red dot is possible. (Am thinking it will be a good spot to park my Burris FastFire).

Or is there something simpler?

My opinion only, but on something that short you might be better off with just a big bright front bead...

If he's ever planning on using slugs in that gun, a bead will be WAY to low. You need some blade to get that barrel pointing down. Also, it's already on the barrel.

I would mount something on a rail on the receiver, then if he ever wants to add an TRS-25 or other red dot, it's a simple matter.

Is the tall front sight leaning to one side?
I've never seen a Chinese barrel index perfectly on a Remington. Most people don't seem to notice it with just the bead but with a tall front sight it should be pretty obvious....

No reason you couldn't mount an XS rail with the integral peep sight and then adjust the height of the front sight if needed with a file but if it's leaning off to the side you will likely have to compensate with the rear to get it on target.

Then can be made to work with crooked sights just like a poorly indexed Rossi or Remlin lever gun but it will always be what it is.

You can put a bead on a base or a ramp, I've done a bunch of them. I can hit an IPSC target at 100m with the bead no problem, I just find the rifle sights to get in the way an interfere with deploying it quickly off the quad or out of the case...

I went with an XS sights Big Dot Tritium sight.

Just enough taller than a bead sight to fix the POA/POI issues, and the white outer ring around the tritium makes it super easy to pick up and get a good sight picture.

Out travelling right now, or I'd post a pick. Mind you, that shotgun is in the trunk, so I'll see if I can sneak out and take a pic of it sometime today or tomorrow.

I've purchased one of these as well, for a grizzly that originally only had a bead. If a bead will suit your purpose you can file/modify the sight and turn it into a base of proper height, then drill and tap for a bead. That's likely what I'll do.

I'm running a rail on my Norinco 870 clone with a 14" brl and an Aimpoint H-1.

I've also used the Vortex RZR-2003 on another 12ga shotgun w/success.

If you use cheaper red dot sights on a shotgun don't be surprised if the recoil eats them.

There have been a few people suggesting the Big Dot. Considering the barrel looks like this I don't think that is a viable option. Unless the front sight post is milled down or removed, and they are brazed on.

I went with Wilson Trac Locs with a tritium vial in the front blade. It works well for me.

Either way your drilling or grinding ... Altering the reciever or after market barrel.

True, maybe I should have used the word practical opposed to viable. It could be done. However IMHO milling/grinding the entire front sight off, filing the barrel smooth, then drilling and tapping to install a bead to put the big dot on top of would not be simpler than installing a rear ghost ring. Unless a bead is what he really wants, but as I understood the original post he is just trying to find a simple solution to make a barrel like the one pictured work. XS big dot is awesome, but not a simple solution in this case.

For the time being the fella is just happy to have a shotgun that sits nicely on the front rack of his quad.

Seeing how happy he was with the barrel, I knew there was no chance of getting the "loaned" barrel back so I ordered another for myself.

No rush on my own project, just accumulating parts as I have the funds. Suspect that I will end up drilling and tapping the reciever and mount something like the VangComp or XS sights (rail and ghostring). They are a bit pricy but will keep an eye out for used alternatives or good sales.

Did look at a mount that had no drilling and tapping needed, (B-Square or Leapers) but it was bulky and just simply looked bad. Besides I dont want to add any extra weight at all, the all steel 870 (with ammo) is more than enough to carry around when hiking.

While its true that the front sight is likely a bit high for anything other than the factory Norinco rear sight, the good news is that there is plenty of material to work with if I choose to shave it down or drill and tap it for something else.
