I've noticed some of the M&P 9 have "caution capable of firing with magazine removed" written on the side. Is this an older or newer model and is either one better?

If you have the box, there should be a four-digit number on label on the end of the box.
The number indicates the date of manufacture - the first number is the year and the next three numbers are the day. Also the round that was fired should have a tested date on it, those are usually within a day or so of rolling off the line.

Example: M&P reads 3017 - the 017th day of 2013 - January 17, 2013

No box, I have one without the white safety lettering, and my buddy is looking at buying one with the safety lettering. We were wondering what the diff and yr of make was.

The difference is the magazine disconnect "feature". You can remove it.

I think your friend is probably looking for S&W SKU 109301 (maybe 109201).

yes ,I know that, do all the new range kits have the new safety feature?

The magazine disconnect feature isn't new. Your friend would have to confirm the S&W SKU within the range kit.

Again, it really doesn't matter because it can be removed quite easily.

Just an option. I believe most shoot with a magazine disconnect safety so if the magazine isn't in the gun it won't fire. It's a thing the lawyers talked S&W to do IMHO

My buddy carries a M&P 40 for a living moving money, if you drop the mag it's hard for someone to use your gun against you.

Huh? Are we still talking about your "friend"? Do you want to know about Apex trigger kits?

Both, he's looking at one that has white lettering on the side(mag safety ) . Mine don't ( that's why I asked the first question ). Mine has a trigger upgrade. I got it off the EE and was just wondering if there was diff trigger kits and how you tell. I know from feel that my trigger is not 10 lbs, but it has a long pull before the trigger engages.

I don't understand this line of thinking.

I sorta do. It's a safety feature you know about but the bad guys might not. If they get the drop on you and disarm you, you may have an opportunity to pop the mag. Extremely limited obviously, and more likely to hamper you than a bad guy.

Yes , but the opposite is also true. If for some reason the mag was lost, yet all you had was the one round left in the chamber for your personal defense.....

Then you're pretty much effed anyway. My M&P has a mag safety and frankly, despite running the gun fairly hard in courses, I've never even noticed it. It's not like the BHP mag safety that affects the trigger, it's just there. Load, fire repeat as necessary.

As a striker fire, even without a trigger job, the M&P pull would be under 10lbs. Mine started out of the box at 6.

From a previous comment on not having a thumb safety, The m&p uses a trigger safety, so as you pull it, it hinges clear allowing the trigger to move rearward to release the striker. As a result, the reset only seems long if you fully release the trigger for you next shot. In some respect, the trigger behaves as a DA for movement; again a designed safety feature. With a bit of work you can shorten the reset and the full travel forward, but you need a different trigger safety for the latter.
