Just how far can one take a 22lr?

That does sound like a challenge! But geeze... clear the local airspace cause that's a point into the sky and pull the trigger.

Strelok app says 16683" holdover with cci's. That's 1384 feet above the target!

How bout a more reasonable distance.... 1000yds?

dangerous out to a mile? less than 8lbs/ft of energy. While it may get there, I am not sure that qualifies as dangerous. Hell spark plugs torque with 14 lbs/ft

Normally take my 10/22 out to 300 yards whenever I take it out. Shooting at an old bell satellite tv dish bent in half so it can stand by itself. Usually I can manage 9/10 if the wind is reasonable.

penetration is only one part. if you get lucky and strike right in a vital organ it may be lethal. however i doubt that even if you took a .22 in most organs that it would be lethal. i would define lethal is little hope of survival within a short period of time. the important thing is tissue damage. the wound channel from a .22 is so small that it wouldnt do a ton of damage. even something like a 9mm hollow point which creates a MUCH larger wound cavity often times isnt lethal. speak to anyone who has done combat tours overseas and they will tell you that people get shot in the torso with a 7.62 round from an AK and keep running at you.

the most common reason for death after a gunshot is infection and not the wound itself. here in canada we have easy access to a hospital in all of our populated areas. we will be at a hospital and in an OR (if needed) very fast. i would see something like a pistol as more of a shock value and deterrent weapon. your goal isnt to kill them but to scare them off. they may slink off somewhere and die later but if they are within a few feet of you with a knife you will be dead before they will. if i would need to drop someone in 1-2 shots it would be with a large caliber HP to create as large of a wound cavity as possible.

The 597 isn't really the most accurate gun for the job but should prove interesting. Some good subsonic ammo and a high power scope (thinking 6-24x50)

That being said, of all the common semi auto .22LR's out there, I have found the 597 to be the most accurate and consistent right out of the box.
I don't know why, it might be the big old thick barrel on it compared to the thin profile on the other models but I sold my Rugers and Marlin over time and now have my lone 597 as my only .22 LR ;)
I bought her with a more than slight bias and skepticism and now I can't say enough good things about it lol

We bust clays out to 200 yards... I have shot at 400... but I don't bother with it anymore... haven't shot past 100 yards in a long time... I have a bevy of centerfire rifles including, .22 K-Hornet, .223, .22/250, .243 etc.. etc... I reload and they are cheap to shoot and more appropriate at extended ranges... I'd rather see groups measured in fractions of an inch, rather than feet.

My marlin 60 would do many many .5" groups at 50 yards so there are some out there but its rare
