Gents: Recommend me a quality "black rifle" in any calibre other than 223 or 308.

I think your sol buddy I can't think of anything that falls within your requirements other than a vz58, maybe a ThuRion. Everything else is either out of your price range or .223 or 308 or something you named as a no go. Or not a black rifle at all (sks)

if you want to broaden your selection your going to have to reconsider some of your requirements. I'm also very skeptical on how you could get a smith to build a semi auto black rifle for that price, other than atrs I don't know of anyone in canada who does build a non restricted black rifle and those sure aren't only $1500. Only 1200 custom built semi that comes to mind would be an AR and of course that's restricted.

Your gonna have to go back to the drawing board if you don't want a Jr, ruger or Vz its just not in the realm of possibility in canada that's all there is.
 
You could get a norc m305 and rebarrel it to 243 or something but it would be really iffy if it didn't exceed $1500

Edit: just realized your limit was $1300 not $1500 ya you definitely couldn't do this.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned the BRS-99? Comes in NR, shoots 9mm and is wickedly compact. The mock supressor isn't so bad, better than the NR version with the pencil thin barrel for sure.

I have a parkerized restricted version and it's a great gun so far.
 
If your budget is heading towards $2000.00plus the Kriss Vector another pistol carbine option, Modern design ideas, but maybe the look is "Ghey" for you?
Not sure how I feel about them, I'd have to shoot it first.
 
You say a useful black rifle, combined with those rather strict requirements, seems to me your best bet is a Vz58 in 7.62x39 or a Mini 30. Pistol cal carbines are fun but I wouldn't call them useful, or a black rifle. Of course that depends on your definition of "useful".

It makes a perfect companion. I can't vouch for a 5.56 version (although, I plan on getting one) but they are reliable once you get the troublesome '13 bugs fixed. I have a '13 CSA that was f*ckered, but Movie Arms fixed it and it runs 100%. 1000+ rounds no problems.

he has a budget in mind, $1300 tops, last brs 99's I saw were going for close to $1600, a cx4 should be in the relm though they're around $1300?
