Remember when you could buy.....

Anyone remember what a box of .22s went for? I'm thinking for under a buck you could buy a box of whiz bangs.

When I first started shooting a 22, shorts were 39 cents, longs 49 cents and Long rifles were 59 cents. All C.I.L. manufacture. ["Super-Clean"
or "Whiz-Bang"] At slightly more money you could buy "Bisley" or "Central-V" target ammo, also made by C.I.L.

When I first pumped gas, regular was 33 cents a gallon, and premium was 2 cents more. [ that's 7¼ cents a liter for you non-imperial folks]

But, when pumping that gas, I made $1.45/hr. :(

Regards, Dave.

I remember when SIR (now Cabela's) was strictly mail order, but every now and then they had a special day when you could go check out the warehouse. Sooo much cool stuff...

SIR was great. You could actually order things through them. Cabelas and wholesale sports are big let downs. Wholesale wasn't bad years ago but they have slide down the hole in the last 10 years or so.

I remember at 16 walking into Zellers and buying a brand new Remington nylon 66 and 6boxes of CIL 22s for$78 no questions asked,no paperwork to fill out,no pal,no fac and no strange looks by the cashier.

Pop went from a nickel to 7¢ when I was in Grade 3. A 40% increase! I guess people were hoarding pop back then.........

Yup. Same thing with Wholesale, when it used to be Farmers Supply they always had tons of high end gear of all types in stock, and they would order you anything.

Farmer's Supply when they were in their first Main St. store, just south of the store on the corner, was tops. Usually you could get Lyle or the old man to drop the sticker price, which was already cheaper than SIR, Jennings or Ernie's, so you weren't paying sales tax, or at least didn't feel like you were. Of course hanging out in Jennings old store on Garry was Nirvana for a gun guy, and a trip to Ernie's when he worked out of his house on Dugald Rd. was never disappointing. Anyone remember SIR in the basement at POLO Park? In those days a Winchester M-70, a Remington 700, or a Ruger 77 went for about $165, a M-94 Winchester was under $100, and a buba-ed Lee Enfield at Eatons, Simpson-Sears, or McCleods was less than $30.

I bought a brand new model 70 Winchester in 1963 for 179.95. Wish I had bought several at the time, lol.

Dave.

That 179 is now over 1400 dollars if you punch that into the inflation calculator, that would not be a very good investment. Now if you would have bought a pre CBS Era fender strat with that 179 then you would now own a guitar worth well over 20k.
