So I have a mashed up firing pin retainer in my 53 simminov, all other parts of this gun are mint. But i managed to "over clean" the retainer pin after it had a little rust spot from corrosive ammo. This caused the pin to begin to turn slightly when i fired until eventually it began to get mashed up and jam the firing pin in the forward position. So now i have an sks in very good condition, with a very bad retaining pin. It is a $3-$7 part in the usa but I cant find them anywhere in canada. I took my sks to my gun smith and showed him the problem, and asked for a new retaining pin. He found that humorous.. and said "good luck finding one of those"... he offered to put a small weld on the retainer pin to put some meat back on it so it wouldn't slip anymore. It worked for about 120 rounds over the course of a two day camping trip in the summer.. now its back at it again. (probably softened the weld firing it like a canadian gun nut)

Now, what if I were to borrow a retainer pin from a friend's sks, make a mold of it in clay or concrete.. and melt down some metal and pour myself a new one?

Has anyone tried something like this? What kind of metal should I use? would aluminum work?

Cheers and happy nutting.

Its not a forum sponsor but Milarm in Edmonton carries a lot of extra sks parts they even have a small bin of bolts on the shelf there. Give them a call I am sure they would sell you one and mail it to you. From there use the bolt or just take the retaining pin out.

It is my understanding that Lever scrapped a pile of SKS rifles to make parts. I have purchased trigger groups and magazines from them in the past. I would expect them to have a handful of pins available. Buy 2 and sleep better.

It, was in my earlier less wise gun nutting years, it was my first gun. I scrubbed the pin with fine sand paper and took to much metal off. It caused the pin to move around when I fired the gun and the head got mashed up when it turned in a way it shouldn't. I considered just buying another sks, but I got mine back when they were about $15 cheaper (from trade x)and considering all I need is a tiny $3 part, paying for another sks is just too much for me at the moment.

Looks like they still have complete bolts , Probably my cheapest/least time consuming way to go. Thanks.
