I know when I started researching places to hunt pigs in Texas there was a big lack of detailed reviews and information. Figured I would post this to try and help alleviate that a bit.
Arrowhead Outfitters Review
We did not hunt their fly in drop camp service in Alaska, we hunted their Hog and Deer operation just outside Cameron Texas.
The location is easy to get to. The accommodation is perfectly fine for a few guys hunting but isn't someplace you would take your wife. Beds were comfortable and place was kept nice and clean. There was good heating and air in all the rooms. There was lots of fridge space for beverages and snacks and the cleaning and hanging facilities were more than adequate. There were only three of us in camp the Week of Mar 16th, 2015, so shower and bathroom facilities were fine. With 10 in camp, a one holer and one shower would require some close coordination.
The rate was $359 a day per hunter for hunting, accommodation and three meals, including soft drinks. Shoot as many hogs as you like but you do your own cleaning, and skinning. There is processing facilities available close by if you want you kills cut and wrapped, they will also skin but hogs must be gutted prior to drop off.
Meals supplied were excellent, the cook, Robert, is a professional chef who has owned his own restaurant.
This service has access to a lot of land, plus 15,000 acres and the hunting is truly free range. They have done a very good job of putting up quality blinds and well laid out feeders that are maintained and feed twice daily, not just when they have someone in camp. They also have plenty of food plots and corn the travel corridors to keep the pigs in the open longer.
We were told that 30% of pigs are taken in the morning and 70% in the afternoons. My partner and I hunted hard for three days. We walked into the blinds in the dark and were in the blinds at daylight, feeders were set to trip at 8:00 which is about an hour after sun up. We stayed in them till noon, by which time it was getting too hot to stay in the blind. We walked back into the blinds by 3 and sat till an hour after dark every day. We saw no pigs the first day and no pigs on feeders in the afternoon either. Our guide Steve, who worked very hard for us, saw one small group of pigs. We put a stalk on the group and got one small pig. We saw nothing all day the next day.
The third day was raining from light to very hard. Saw nothing in the morning, Steve was so concerned over the lack of hogs we were seeing, there was LOTS of sign, he even tried pushing a couple of bushes. It was a lot of hard work in the early afternoon sun but still no pigs. Evening was approaching and as we were passing near one of the blinds we saw pigs in the feeder wallow. This was about 500 yards from where we had spotted and stalked the first pig. Collected one 200 pounder by stalking up on that group. We saw one more group just before dark, but it was RAINING VERY HEAVY, visibility was poor and shooting position wasn’t strong so I elected to pass.
In the three days we saw three small bucks, about 20 whitetail does, a bobcat, one coyote and a whole bunch of watchable birds and wildlife. We saw relatively few Pigs but the countryside was lush green from all the rain and the pigs weren’t relying on the corn for food. They had thousands of acres of oat and wheat/alfalfa fields to feed on. It was also very hot for that early in the year. I would go a little earlier in the year for better luck over bait. The one fellow who was spot and stalk longbow hunting saw no pigs or deer in two days either so it was clear the pigs were out feeding at night and with the abundance of food and heat, bedded before daylight.
Arrowhead provides a quality free range hunt and quality food, accommodations and a great guide. If I was looking to shoot a whole pile of hogs, this would not be my first choice, as the population just isn’t that dense through Arrowhead's area, though the area around Cameron is known as one of the real Texas hot spots for pig hunting. That said, for a quality hunt where they work hard to get you on game, this is a great place to go.
Hope this helps some others out.
