Ok guys I have seen a lot of rifles with breaks and some that don't have them.I know the big calibers have them but what about a 308.
I have shot my T3 sporter not breaked and a trg 22 that was real big difference in shooting, what are the regular shooters using.
Thanks.
need to learn how to spell brake:)

I will say brakes make a big difference , I have a 300 win mag setup for PR and the recoil is like a 308 . All my rifles have breaks , but it depends which brake you choose because like everything else there's good and then there's great.

Brakes work. Only caveat is that your game may not allow them - F-Class doesn't - so practicing with a brake only to have to compete without doesn't make a lot of sense.

You won't make any new friends at the range with a muzzle brake on your rifle :p Unless it is another shooter with a muzzle brake :nest:
Brakes are allowed in precision rifle events but not target rifle/F-Class events.

If you have your own private range by all means put a brake on it. If you shoot at a public range with a brake you won't make any friends.

I have a 10 TR .308 with a 24" bbl. I think with the scope and bipod it weighs about 11 lbs. I shot it without a brake for a little while, then got a brake from ATRS. The difference is very noticeable. As has been said, you can't shoot F class with it. Too bad, they won't have the pleasure of my company. I ain't takin' it off!
I didn't know it was allowed in precision rifle, so I will check that out. I just hope they have a "factory" class... C.

i put a Fat Bastard on my 20" tikka sporter in 6.5se. Was a real pleasure to shoot 100+ rds a session. BUT even me as the shooter got quite a bit of muzzle blast. It would wear on you in short order.Mayb a different style of brake would have been better suited for it.Building a .284 with no brake for some lr plinking.Wait and see what its like.

...and I thought by the title of this thread, that it was about some new break action precision rifle. Little did I know the op was talking about muzzle brakes. wuff!

As of about 3 years ago, I now have a perforated ear drum courtesy of a rifle shooter at the next
bench using a high powered rifle with a brake.
I wish that shooters with brakes would be more aware of the tremendous muzzle blast that a brake
creates for shooters to the side of them.

At our range I encourage people with brakes to show a little respect for other shooters. I myself will wait for everyone to finish shooting and then let them know I'm going to shoot, that way they can take action to protect, them selves, leave the line or use more hearing protection. I prefer to shoot my rifles with muzzle brakes when the range is empty but can't at times.

I absolutely abhor muzzle brakes, and would never install one on a rifle.

If I cannot tolerate the recoil as is, then that rifle is not for me.

To each their own, and some obviously like them, but if I see an ad for a rifle in the EE, and I am interested,
then I find it has a permanent brake on it, or is magna-ported, my interest drops to zero immediately.

Regards, Dave.

If someone comes to a gun range and won't be your friend because you have a brake. You don't want that snotty pansy to be your friend anyways. Your at a gun range, I never knew you were supposed to be quite like a golf course.

Jesus what sort of range are you a member at? At precision shoots I'm laying right next to guys on either side of me blasting away with brakes at the same time I'm shooting. Were maybe 3' apart. I assumed everyone wore hearing protection, I have 338 Lapua going off 3' from my head and it no problem at all. You would think with all the money guys spend on guns they wouldn't wear a $40 Canadian Tire pair of ear protection. Get some peltors and you won't have any issues.

Have to disagree with you on this. I shoot precision as well and even being 10' from a 300WM at NSCC last year was unpleasant to say the least. Brakes are a part of that game and I don't begrudge those who use them (especially that guy who was with Peel Region), but I MUCH prefer shooting next to those who don't have them. Kudos to those of you who make an effort to be courteous of other shooters at your range if you are shooting braked, the rest of us really do appreciate it.

Muzzle brakes have their place. I have a 308 warbird that has one but it was cerakote with the brake on so you can't even tell where the barrel and the brake meet. I just hate taking it off incase some of the cerakote chips lol but I can't see the need for one on a regular .308. Or even a 300 win mag for that matter. I know everybody shoots different and different calibers affect different people in a different way but a 308 has little to no recoil and I can't see why anybody would want one. I was shooting a 300 win mag since I was 12 up until last year and I never developed any bad habits by the little bit of recoil that it had. Ofcourse one of my friends has the same rifle i shot in the same caliber and he complains how much it hurts his shoulder so I guess it's different for everybody.

Scott, I think you nailed it... being courteous is #1. I usually shoot early mornings when it's not busy, and I warn whoever is there that I am braked and to stay away from me if it is bothersome.
If it does get too busy, the .308 goes in the trunk and the shotgun comes out... then I get to play with guys who shoot Brownings with WAY too many holes in their barrels. Some guys actually PAY to have that done to a perfectly good shotgun!
I have talked to other shooters, and they all say it's not the noise of a braked c\f, but the blast\concussion blowing back from the sides.
Oh, and about ear plugs... I have found the orange ones that look like high power insulators are great, especially if you have muffs over them... C.

When had my eardrum perforated, I was wearing Peltors. As a long time shooter and instructor I value
the protection of quality products. The muzzle blast & as mentioned, also the concussion, can only be
prevented up to a certain point, no matter what make or model of ear muffs. Even doubling up can only
do so much.
Having said that, let me say that I realize and accept that our sport produces noise. I have been to the full auto
shoots at Knob Creek , Kentucky a few times. Now THAT is noise.
However, when the shooter knows that he/she will be creating excessive noise ( I.E. a muzzle brake or a .50 BMG )
then I feel that some courtesy to the others on the line is not unreasonable.
