As the title suggests, I am currently in the market for a hunting / bush / plinking rifle in .308.

I have owned a Gunsight Scout and two M305s and several Tikkas but not the Battue. The Gunsight Scout I sold simply because I didn't like the action compared to the Tikkas I own. The M305 in 22" that I took out hunting I found to be a little impractical (Springfield flash hider I had was pinking every time it touched a branch and I think the safety might have been a little too loud). I'm hesitating on the T3 Battue because I prefer aperture sights and I would rather have a larger capacity mag but other than that I now Tikka are fantastic rifles. In a perfect world, the CTR stock and mag would be married to the Battue barrel and iron sights but unfortunately this doesn't look possible at the moment.

What are your thoughts? This rifle will be for the woods but I still want something accurate enough to take a deer on the far side of a cut (300m?). I had an M305 shorty and that shot well and I can't remember why I sold it. If I get another M305 it would have to be a shorty. I wpull consider giving another shot but again, I'm really not a huge fan of the Mauser style action. And Tikkas, well I just love Tikkas. Clear I'm torn.

The sites on the battue are fantastic for quick target acquisition. Idont know how well they will work at 300m though

As well as your eyes.

The Savage Model 10FCM Scout was most commonly found in .308Win through its life. It has only a four round magazine but it has a ghost ring rear sight, a Weaver type scope base mounted on the barrel for an extended eye relief scope and it's drilled and tapped for mount bases in the conventional position over the receiver. Over time they added the Accutrigger and Accustock. Any new ones on dealers shelves should have all of that.

If you can wait a bit dealers should be able to get the new Model 11 Scout this year. It is also .308Win and has a ten round magazine, similar sights and scope mount, and an adjustable cheekpiece.

But you like Tikkas. Try their Battue.

Most of us don't have Caramel-like d'argent to spend. Even if we did the Steyr scout is not better than the Ruger Scout, Tikka Battue or even the Savage Scout for that matter. In the endless Ford/Chevy/Dodge rifle debate it's an overpriced Volkswagen.

I would compare the Steyr stuff more to a Beemer, this target showned up here is with cheap Corelockts ammo, good ammo will close that group to .5 MOA easy... JP.

If I was looking for a compact light weight .308, I'd take a hard look at the new Howa Alpine Mountain Rifle, although I'm on the fence concerning the choice of the hinged floor plate or the DBM. I'd prefer to handle each before choosing. It would be easy enough to fit that rifle with a set of quality aftermarket irons if that was deemed desirable, then topped with a variable low power scope, and the addition of a shooting sling, it would make a fine general purpose rifle.

How big of a task is it to fit aftermarket irons to a rifle? If this is an affordable option then I would quickly add the Tikka CTR to my list. I have yet to handle one so weight but be a concern but it would give me an extra mag for my TRG-22!

If you want to a 305 I would suggest an 18.5" barrel length one, since these are a lot less cumbersome than the 22" barreled ones. The SOCOM 18 with the reversible flash hider are the shortest length type 305's and I have been quite satisfied with the 305's that I have had, more so than an M1A I had due to its overall length. In the case of the Ruger Scout rifle I found it quite heavy and if you want to mount a conventional scope you either have to remove the rear sight or get a full length XS sight rail rail if you still want to have backup iron sights with a conventional scope. When I had Scout rifle I also tried using it with American Defense Cantilevered scope mount with 2" cantilever and an intermediate length eye relief scope, however I found it to heavy. I have tried hunting with both a Ruger Frontier and the Ruger Scout with a long eye relief scopes and did not find it suited my purpose. I currently have a Tikka Battue and I really like the rifle, since it is easy to mount a conventional scope and still be able to use the iron sights if you want to. The iron sights on the Battue are also very good and the Tkka Battue is also considerably less expensive and lighter than the Ruger Scout and I believe a more accurate rifle from my limited experience, however since I live in a remote area I tend to carry a rifle whenever I walk my property, rather than shoot at a rifle range.

Do a google or YouTube search for Battue performance at 100 yards... impressive. The sights are excellent.

I have one in 30-06, fully Arma-coated, and sporting a small 1.25-4 VXR scope on a QD mount. I wouldn't trade it for any other "scout" rifle regardless of price.

I have an extra Tikka T3 Truglo Battue front sight assembly on EE. The barrel would need to be drilled and tapped by a qualified smith for it to fit.

The advertised weight of the Howa is 5.7 pounds Fitting after market sights is a fairly basic chore for a gunsmith; I prefer a barrel band front sight of the Brno/CZ, NECG, or Ruger persuasion. The style of rear sight depends on your preferences and scope mounting option, Talley makes a nice ghost ring which fits to their bases.
