I know this has been asked a hundred times, but this time is a little different. I am planning on buying a sxs 20ga in the near future, before next hunting season. This will be a strictly hunting gun. Maybe a flat a year. What i want is, 26in barrels, steel shot capable, and as light as possible. I've looked at the cz and baikal, just wondering if there are any other recommendations. My budget is under 1500

Just bought a beauty Browning SXS 20 gauge, 26" barrels choke Mod/IC... plan to give it a work out this weekend, but this will be an upland gun... it was inside your budget. My son shoots a Tobin 12 SXS and a CZ Bobwhite 20 SXS... I borrowed the CZ for a late season grouse hunt last fall, nice little gun, handles and balances very well.

There are lots if great SxS guns around in your price range as Hoytcannon suggested .
check out a many as you can and pick one!
I gravitate towards vintage SxS guns but also have s few modern KBR's and the BSS is a good one as SRD the various CZ guns.

A few words of advice maybe. Shotgun fit is much more important then removable chokes. Also fixed choke barrels tend to be lighter and better handling then most shotguns with changeable chokes. Barrels with removable chokes tend to suit the guy interested mostly in skeet/trap/clays/steel shot, versus upland bird hunting only. Hence they tend to be a little bit heavier near the muzzle because thicker metal is required to accommodate the internal threads.

Thanks for the opinions, I have a ithaca flues 16 sxs, love the gun but the left firing pin is starting to get weak, and the lock up is not as tight as it once was. Also the 16ga is hard to find non toxic shot. So that leave me looking for the new 20ga.

Oscar Kob. ( and more than a few others ) down there can fix up your pin problems and tighten up the loosens on that old Fues with no problem , and depending on how much non tox you need you can hand load it easily.
However I do agree with Brutus about fit versus chokes - in fact, the chokes are the last thing I worry about if I am buying an older gun.

BTW, last week one of the guys had a great little Baikal 20 SxS at thes club
i was quite taken it as it had 26"barrels and swung really well!

Thank Cat, any chance you would have the contact info for a good smith on my side of the country. I wasn't aware that these guns could be tightened back up.

As for reloading, what kind of shot is out there that would be safe to shoot in one of these older guns? I've never reloaded, but it maybe worth it as even lead is hard to find at time, and when it is available the selection is very slim.

Oh yeah, pins, hinges, springs, there are a myriad of things that can be repaired so these old guns can keep going!
Oscar's number is (902) 587 2257. (His last name is spelled Kob , with only one b, BTW!)
Oscar is the only one I am aware of of the top of my head( I'm on the other side of the of the country!!) but if he is too busy I'm sure that he can recommend someone.

One issue with the Baikal at the moment, is that what is here in Canada, is all that will be here for a while, until the embargoes are lifted against Russia.
The Baikal rep was talking about that in Calgary this weekend.

The top gun in this photo, is the BSS 20 SXS that I bought here off the EE for an amount within your budget...

Just bought a new CZ Bobwhite for just that purpose. Lightweight, screw in chokes, and I also wanted a straight stocked gun. Brand new it was just over 1200.

I did see that another guy had a straight stocked Stoeger Uplander Supreme with 20 & 28G barrels on the EE a while ago, might be still there.

I borrowed my son's Bobwhite last fall for a late season grouse hunt... nice little gun... he only paid $750 a couple years ago at our LGS... have they really gone up that much???
