is it just me or does such a non restricted thing exist? Or are those the exact things that make a semi considered an AR? Closest thing I can think of is an XCR or SU-16 but they aren't free floated correct? Whyyyyyy????

Non restricted-yes
Heavy barrel-yes
Semi-auto-yes
Free float-yes (The barrel does have to be in contact with the gas system to operate, but does not touch the handguard.)

I'm impressed they somehow got it classified as non-restricted.
Superficially looks like an AR15 pattern receiver.

A mere $3500.

Ah, I see what they did. They took the AR15 upper and lower design, and altered the transition line.

That makes the uppers and lowers incompatible with AR15 pattern uppers and lowers but probably
permits use of all of the smaller parts interchangably.

I'm guessing they charge a premium for their product since it is non-restricted and probably
made using CNC rather than less expensive production techniques.

Right in all accounts

Actually, you are wrong on almost everything here. The Modern Hunter is a new design from the ground up. The upper and lower do not simply have an altered transition line, they are joined in a totally different fashion. The charging handle is on the side (like an XCR, ACR or others) not on the back of the upper like an AR.

There are many other significant differences and these are outlined in this thread: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1145482-The-Modern-Hunter-Pics-amp-Video-Thread

Without a doubt, anyone who buys a Modern Hunter is absolutely paying a premium. Part of this premium is due to the fact that each rifle is individually made to order. They don't benefit from "economy of scale". Speaking as someone who owns a rifle built by ATRS, they are expensive, but they are in my opinion, worth every penny.

Although they do not currently have a Modern Hunter in .223, there are, if I remember correctly, plans to make a Modern Varminter that would include .223.

I visited ATRS at the Calgary gun show last weekend. Got to hold a couple of the modern hunters they had on the table and was next to another fella who asked the guy about a "modern varminter" and he said something to the effect of "yes it's in the works but right now we are so busy with the modern hunter we're waiting until we fill our orders before moving on"

or something like that. I can't remember exactly what he said I just remember hearing that yes indeed, they plan on making a .223 / 5.56 version (300 AAC, 50 Beo?)

Check out the Volquartsen Evolution, available in .223 or .204 Ruger chamberings. Not a "Black Rifle" but suits your criteria otherwise.

The Volquartsen Evolution in .223 Rem has MSRP of around $US2500.

Wantstalls has some of the other Volquartsen products but not that one.

Milarm is also a dealer, and I inquired about the evolution previously.

We are a Volquartsen Dealer, however - If we place an order for an Evolution rifle, they are built to order directly from Volquartsen, and they are incredibly meticulous in their construction. Therefor the waiting time for a custom build rifle is in the area of 18 to 36 months (more likely on the higher end of that spectrum). We have several of the Evolution rifles custom ordered for customers that are in the 2+ years time, that we may get this year.

If you are serious about an order, we require a 30% NON-REFUNDABLE (and non-transferrable) deposit. I will need all the features and styles you are looking for in the rifle: (Caliber + barrel length, Compensator or no, Fluted, type of rifle stock, custom finishes or no) and I can get a rough price estimate for you for final approval.

You can use the website to choose the custom options then print & fax or Email a copy to us (or just tell us all the options including any you DO NOT want) so I can begin looking into this rifle for you.

It will most definitely be a long drawn out process, however the rifles are incredible and an exceptionally accurate rifle; and all the customers that have received the rifles in the past have had nothing but excellent things to say of them.

If you wish to proceed with an order, please give us a call or reply here, and I can start looking into it for you.

If varminting is the goal, Modern Hunter in .22-250(or .243) would fit the bill as well.
