Feedback wanted: VZ58 variable optic on NEA railed upper?

Good afternoon all, in an attempt to further improve the efficiency of my VZ-58 rifle I am considering moving up from a forward mounted red dot to a forward mounted variable power scout scope. I would like to find something in the 1-4x or 1-5x range. My eyes aren't the greatest and I struggle shooting the dot out at distance. I would like to be able to target shoot, do fun run and gun shooting, and hunt within reasonable range all with this rifle. I am trying to build a "one rifle" rig on a VZ-58 platform. So far I am pleased with everything except the sights/optics.

I do have two questions I hope you good people can help me with.

First has anyone really tested how well the NEA railed upper holds zero and if it holds zero when it is taken on/off for cleaning?

Second what long eye relief scope have members here used with good results out on the railed upper?

I know there are a few photos floating around with optics out front but a search here on the forum didn't bring up any results.

I'm working on an M38 scout rifle build at the moment, and am in a bit of a quandry as to what I'm going to use for an optic as well. I know lalunette built a nice Mosin scout rig with a Bushnell forward mounted scope, and is quite happy with it.

My "one rifle" build, at the moment, is an SKS with a standard mounted optic, and I'm using a Vomz Pilad 1.2-6x scope on it. Great optic for the price, and I really like that range of magnification. At 1.2x the eye relief is really generous, so it makes for a quick sighting optic for snap shots out to reasonable ranges, with a really clear aim point, and 6x is more than enough for 7.62x39 type of ranges if I want to reach out a bit, or make sure of shot placement.

The only reason I mention that is because you might want to consider a side mounted rail for your VZ. Lots of options out there, and you have a lot more options for what kind of scope you can put on it.

My M38 scout build is all about "because I can afford to and I feel like it" sort of thing. But for an all around gun, my SKS is a winner at the moment. To the point where when i do eventually suck it up and go for a VZ-58 build, I'm going to go with a standard eye relief arrangement, and then it will supplant my SKS as my "one rifle" rifle.

7.62x39 is a great all around cartridge out to 200meters or so. It filled my freezer with some nice free-range, organic meat a few weeks ago.

I'm going to keep an eye on this thread, because the type of scope you're looking for fits with what I'm looking for as well, and I'm curious about the options out there.
 
I'm thinking of mounting an optic where the rear sight is. With a scout mount in place of the rear sight and some sort of optic. The forward top rail is too far forward for my liking. I will have to see just how sturdy that mount is when I actually mount it.

So, I'm also interested in your question. Although, I may opt for a red dot instead of a low power optic. Or some type of peep sight arrangement.

Oh, there's interest, here and there... GunNutz can just be a conservative bunch, we like to go with what we know, the tried and true.

I'm actually really keen to get my M38 "Scout Rifle" put together. To the point where I spent (more than I'll admit to) to get one of the Brass Stacker mounts up from the US, instead of settling for the cheapo stuff available on eBay.

It's an interesting concept. I like the theory of it. But in practice? I guess we'll know depending on what deer shot picture I post next year.

I've been looking for a scout scope but the eye relief is an issue with how I wanted to mount the scope.

I will keep looking though.

I am thinking now I'd like to have two optics for the rifle, both on return to zero QD mounts. One red dot and one scout scope that I could switch back and forth would make for a very versatile platform for sure.
 
The one on marstars says 11 inches of eye relief.

Heh i would but dont have the funds at the moment.

Just wanna see if its even possible.
