Hello Fellow Gunnutz! I managed to find a nice Savage 99 in 30-30 Winchester.
The rifle appears to be in good condition for being around 78 years old!

I added a nice Machined Leupold scope base , so I dont have to drill and tap the reciever for the Weaver bases.
The bore seems almost new!

Hope you like the pictures:

This model has a butt plate hinge plate that gives some storage room (for a cleaning rod)? I have never seen a savage 99 option like this.

Who here has more history on these rifles? This will be a fun gun to shoot jacketed and cast bullets!

Some good info on the rest of their site too, you might have already found it or similar since you seem to know it's age. Edit: didn't see your last post before I posted.

I've never seen a buttplate like that on a 99 before, nor could I dig up any info on it. I'll have to say I'm glad you didn't drill it for scope mounts, it's a real beauty and I'm thinking one of the less common 99s.

Homemade/odd mount......are the rear bolts in the tang area where the peep sight would go? Is the front receiver D+T'd ? Nice rifle with the left side brass round counter and spool internal. If you don't wish to store it cocked.......make sure it's unloaded and depress the trigger as you close the lever. There is a pin [cocking indicator]on the top of the receiver, that may be visible under the mount .Small piece of forend missing .At least you can use pointy bullets in her.I recently picked up a 99 in .300 Savage ....Harold

Thanks for the tips! The fellow who sold me the scope mount gave me
The same advice. This will save on the firing pin spring fatigue.

The mount has the mounting holes that correspond to the tang peep sight threaded holes, and the front of the mount has a key way that slides into position and locks down on the rear sight dovetail. A real ingenious design I feel! I can used any Leupold cam lock front ring and windage adjustable rear ring set.

aS THE op SAID, THERE IS A DOVETAIL INSERT THAT SLIDES INTO THE REAR SIGHT SLOT AND LOCKS DOWN WITH A SET SCREW. tHE INSERT IS TAPPED FOR TWO SCREWS TO HOLD THE FRONT PART OF THE SIGHT.
I HAD TWO OF THESE MADE FOR 99'S AND ONE FOR AN 1899. tHEY ARE ROCK SOLID. using A lEUPOLD 2-7x32 SCOPE i'VE SHOT
moa GROUPS WITH MY .300 eg AND HALF-INCH GROUPS WITH A .250 eg.

Hmmmm.....sorry, caps lock problem!

You were right, the mount is non-factory, made by a machinist in California. He welds extensions on a Leupold one-piece Savage 99 mount, shapes, drills and polishes/blues it. Price is about $200.00 CDN and well worth the money.

Wasn't wearing my glasses so didn't notice the front dovetail but it looks solid and preserves the gun's value. The front forend screw can be gently tightened to increase pressure on the barrel.First slip a cut to fit business card under the tip .These 99's can be tweaked to 1/2" -1" shooters at 100 yards with that simple trick.Harold { if you are concerned about the paper holding moisture....lightly oil it first]

Man, that is one gorgeous 99 you got hold of there, very nice.Somebody took good care of it by the looks of things,I'm a bit envious but very happy for you!

Thanks guys! I liked the condition of it right away, and when I found out it was a 30-30, I immediately looked closer!

The bore looks great after cleaning! I have so much brass and components for this caliber, its going to be so much fun! Hope it shoots well!

I have to load a variety of different bullet styles. Cast bullets will be fun!
