Found A Fun And Relatively Rare Savage In 30-30 Win.

I got a chance to shoot a few groups today. It took me 3 rounds to get the rifle on paper at 25, then Printed this3 shot group at 100 yards:

I managed to shoot a 1.25" and a 1.4" group with the other load tests. Looks promising!
This is the old girl with an busnell 3-9 Scopechief from the mid eighties. I will eventually get a 2-7 range scope after load development.

Gaaaaaaaaaawd I hate sea-kritts.
Wheredja find'er?

I found the rifle at the Dawson Creek gunshow last sunday. I wasnt expecting to buy a gun, but really was suprised to find this one!
She shoots like a dream! Rotary magazine needed a little cleaning to move more smoothly. I rubbed the stock down with some boiled linseed oil, and hand rubbed it in. The grain in the stock really came out! Decent pieces of wood on the old girl!

And that right there is why I never pass up an opportunity to check out our local gunshow, you just never know what may pop up,your very nice Savage is a case in point. What a beauty.

Standard accuracy load for the 30-30 is 34.5gr/Win 748/Fed mag primer/Win or Fed brass/150gr bullet and or for 165-170gr bullet 32gr with the same components.Should shoot under an inch if you play with the shim and bedding screw.Harold

I have some 160 gr. Hornady FTX's loaded with Lever Revolution, Varget, and W748.
I am looking forward to giving them a try!

I put a .020" piece of brass shim stock between the forestock and barrel. So far the rifle really seems to shoot well! Hopefully today I will put the rifle infront of my chronygraph and see what she is doing.

It is wonderful to see the response of fellow shooters when a unique piece of firearm history comes forth!
When I grew up in Saskatchewan, my grandfather had a 99C in 243win that he shot an amazing amount of game with! (16 aunts and uncles, Makes for the need of ALLOT of meat)! This is my first 99 in many years! Funnnn stuff here!

Nice 99 you got there. Never saw a Savage butt plate like that before. I have seen quite a few 99's chambered in .30/30 but all were manufactured from the early 1900's to around the end of WW1. I would bet that the .30/30 wasn't even a catalogue item in the 1930's so a special order rifle. It would be worth researching a little more IMO.

You're not kidding - wow, that latest pic really shows it too. I suppose you're going to tell us you picked it up for a song, too?

Oh my! That is one gorgeous rifle! There are some real gems that show up at gun shows. I have a 1920 30-30 takedown 99 that came to me at a show. It was rather scruffy, so my gunner buddy took it home and refinished it for me.

I also have a 1913 takedown .303 and a standard 1914 .303. Nifty old rifles, they are.

I paid $550.00 for it. I feel thats a fair price. Some may think thats high, some may think its low. I see lots of enjoyable, careful shooting in this rifles future!

Well, I don't think you got ripped off, that's for sure. The '50-60's versions in .300 Sav like the one I inherited from my great uncle are a lot more common, and seem to average close to that price if in good condition. Nice find, sounds like it's in great hands there too.

Hi guys! Does anyone here have any guess as to the specific model of rifle this is in my original post? Is it a 99f or 99G? I am not that educated in these savage model details.

You should go to 24Hourcampfire. They have a pretty good Savage collectors section there. I'd be interested in seeing the thread there.

I signed up last night, so I have to wait a bit till I can get acsess to post threads.
I will certainly post my pictures to see what info they can give me.
