Quick question for the optics gurus, regarding procedures.

If I install a scope & rings on my rifle, setting my desired eye-relief & leveling the crosshairs, then tightening everything down...

Is there any reason, on Gods' green earth, why the scope should be moved to bore-sight the rifle/scope ?

* I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but this is leading into something... H:S:

Maybe they thought your X hairs looked like X and did you a favour
and made them like +?
Did they sell you a bore sight kit?
Could be a new marketing stratittgy.

I bought my Axis from them (WSS). It was the XP package which comes with a scope that is supposed to be boresighted from the factory.

I was a bit surprised when buddy behind the counter said he had to go sight it in for me and then disappeared for like 15 minutes.

Actually take the gun out to shoot a few days later and its not even on paper at 100 yards. What a waste of my time waiting around for him to "bore sight" it.

Savage might bore sight them at the factory, but they sure aren't to keen on getting the cross line up - just about all of them are "canted" (right out of the box).

I think the more important question....

Why on earth are you in WSS to bore sight a rifle?

Jerry

I was thinking the same thing. That's why God put STOP signs on every corner. Put the rifle on the table on sandbags, line up the bore on the middle of the sign and crank the knobs until the reticle is centered on the sign. Voila...bore sighted.

I bought those cartridge shaped laser bore-sighters that you insert into the chamber and have not looked back. I have them in 308, 223 and 30/06 and paid less than $50 shipped for all three on eBay. If you aim at a target 50-100 yards away, you get your windage almost bang on, and be typically low by 1-2 inches. Saves time, money and frustration.

Some people use the single dovetail base with windage adjustment on the rear so it needs to be moved when bore sighting . You would be surprise how many people cant even get close to centering the physical scope with this style ring before they start twisting the turrets !

Obviously with dual dovetail or picatinny / weaver there is no adjustment

You would be surprised how many times my laser boresight kit comes out at the range during the fall to help people who have pounded 20+ rounds and are still not hitting paper with their hunting rifles trying to sight in

Funny / sad story : I had a associate who told me he was pissed at WSS because he missed his deer last fall. He blames it on WSS since they bore sighted it and turns out it was "off" . I was so stunned that he never took it out to actually shoot it to final zero I just walked away !

After too many trips to the range it is sad to see most canadians does not understand the simplest math/physics needed to bore sight or even adjust scopes. Moa and angles is simple geometry that most must have failed in mandatory grade 10 math. lucky we have resources so do not have to rely on value added products.

So what does it lead to?

I've got a cattle fence 80 meters from my deck. I stapled a yogurt container lid to one of the fence posts with a clear line of sight from the deck.
put the rifle sled on the table, pull the bolt, and look down the bore, carefully lining up the lid on the fence post to center of bore.
then move the crosshairs to center of the "target"
works every time for me and usually only minor adjustments are needed on the range to zero at 100 on paper with live ammo
sounds like NoSaleSports is stooping to new lows.

My neighbour has a satellite dish.

Just saying...

I bore sighted my 300 with a black plastic pen holder thing I put out on the snow covered driveway. Then i proceed to jump in the pickup and run right over.... sometimes you win, and sometimes you dont. f:P:

Very similar to what I do ( I don't use the yogurt lid) and I'm never more then a few inches off at 100 yards. Of course you have to be able to look down the barrel.

Ha!! I use my kitchen table, in the shadows and away from the window (feels like a sniper!). Line up on the neighbors dish and play with the turrets until everything lines up.

When I get to the range, I shoot at 50yds. and adjust, then 100 and adjust again. I find that the larger the caliber, the closer you have to bore sight. (bigger bore, not as precise)... C.

I have had so many problems with that same WSS. They have lost a customer in me for life. I've even complained to management and written letters to their head office about my last problem. No response... Big surprise. Just to bad that they are usually the only ones in town that have stock. I'm sure due to their inflated prices.

Doesn't always hit paper at 100 yards after bore sight. I usually start at the 25 yard mark to start, even after bore sighting.
