How far off the lands?

barnes bullets recommends around 50 thou for their bullets .

I try to get it around 10 thou if I have enough bullet to case contact in the neck to keep the bullets from moving in the neck while in the magazine during firing .

with the 75 amax during load development I used 15 thou but found a sweet spot at 10thou off. My barrel is 26" shilen bull barrel 1:8T YMMV Amax benefit with a little jump. Jamming it may get you into extraction issues, if you need to end up pulling your round out during competition or clearing your rifle during a cease fire.

I like my target bullets lightly touching to start. The trouble with talking about distance to lands is one guys touching is another guys 30 thousandths jammed.

If I never de-bullet another load it'll be too soon.

Seating bullets too long can be a bit of a pain. If you are on the bench, shooting targets, and a bullet pulls out of the case neck and stays in the leade,
it is not the end of the world. A nuisance indeed, but not a total disaster.

However, in the field, perhaps on a long awaited hunting expedition, a bullet stuck in the leade will be a disaster.

That is why, on hunting ammo, I ALWAYS stay back of the lands about .015" or so. This assures clearance so that the bullet will not end up stuck,
and pull out of the case when the action is opened to unload.

My long range target load are different. Often, using VLD bullets, I have them jammed about .010" - .015" [Of course, it depends on where they shoot best]

Regards, Dave.
