I have had prohib handguns since 1992 and am "grandfathered" for 12.6 and this just popped into my head tonite,,,,,,We had a fire Sunday and all of my guns were destroyed . I called into the CFC on Tuesday to report the loss (40-50 guns total) and they said they would first send out a re-print of all my certs and once they arrived, i should email them and start the total loss paperwork.

But as far as i can remember, if someone sells their last prohib handgun, they automatically lose their prohib status!

Does this apply to me? or am i being paranoid?

What should I do to ensure I can continue to enjoy prohib handguns for yeas to come.??

Thanks for any input.

Cheers
JOHN

I would buy the cheapest option that qualifiesyou could find at your earliest opportunity. Hopefully they won't play games but don't make it too easy for them. Maybe a nice guy could "lend" you one till this is sorted, then transfer it back

Is it possible to recover one from the fire. That is a frame even with a serial number on it is still considered a firearm. Doesn't have to shoot to be considered a firearm.

this ^^^^
worst case scenario , you keep one charred but recognizeable frame , claim the rest on insurance and start over my friend. such a sad loss, hope everyone in yer family is okay.
I go thru life not fearing much..... but a fire in my home ranks up there with my worst fears.

This is what I was thinking.

If I was in that situation, I'd start to try and get comfortable knowing I'm not going to own prohibited again. Less prohib owners out there the safer it is, right?

you are fine, the guns are still yours, even if they are a puddle. However, I'd do as recommended above and buy a cheapo 12.6 just in case you get an idiot from the CFC with a mission in their mind.

Sorry for your fire .. Average house fire gets to about 1400 degrees. Steel melts at 2500+ .. destroyed is a relative word .. unless aluminum .. that is as low as 650+ .. So your biggest consern is recovery of 40 to 50 guns. I presume you had an insurance rider on that volume of hardware, otherwise more surprises in store .. Hope you can find replacements and the insurance underwriter plays ball ...

I never had a fire, so no advice re insurance company from me .. but get some sooner than later, as I see them being 100 times more a PITA than any CFO or GRC employee. Temper , patina, proofing, may all become problem words .. as I said destroyed is relative ....

To add on a light tangent.

IIRC correctly, if you had your one and only prohib stolen, you would still have prohib status because the firearm exists. So in your situation you should be ok.

Disclaimer: this is using common sense and reason. We all know full well that is extremely lacking in our firearms law, the gov't and the rcmp, so good luck.

Correct me if I wrong but once insurance has paid you for items don't those items become the property of the insurance company? So wouldn't it be like you sold all the guns?
