After a year the McMillan stock arrived. It took long enough and I've just glassed in the pillar bedding aluminum pillars! :)

Here is a pic of one side:

It's a switch barrel & bolt. Yes you heard that right. I've got 2 barrels (.223 and .22-250) and 2 bolts since both calibers have different bolt faces/diameters. I had my gunsmith setup the barrel with the bolts and the ONE receiver depending upon my needs: more coyote hunting or more groundhog or gopher shooting!

I do have to post some props to Bighorn Sales' Gary Eakin who helped me out along the way. Support our CGN vendors and sponsors because as part of the community, they really step forward and help out in amazing ways. :) I'm super pleased with all of them!

Both barrels are cut down to 18.5" and crowned. That McMillan stock is a Classic Remington profile with a sporter barrel contour, standard hunting fill, 13.5" LOP, and a 3/4" Pachmyer Decelerator pad. I'm a GAP Camo fanboy so I had selected the GAP Camo molded in option. It's such a smooth finish to the touch.

Here's a pic of the other side....

That cheekpiece is a Blackhawk Industries stock cheek piece and I bought it from board sponsor Ellwood Epps for around $37, I believe. I just cannot remember. :p

The bottom metal is a Badger Ordnance M5 unit and the inletting from the factory (McMillan) is oh so sweet. Yahooo :dancingbanana:

The scope is a Mark 4 with a 30mm maintube 4.5 x 14 x 40mm Duplex reticle. Nothing fancy, just a varmint killer! I run ARMS #22 rings so I can pull off that scope whenever my ADD or ADHD kicks in and I want to swap calibers (back to groundhogs with .223 or back to coyotes with .22-250)

Lots and lots of props to the vendors and sponsors on the board who helped me all the way to this rifle, it's a fondler for sitting on the hill tops scanning for varmints! :)

Just to show I'm a real GAP Camo fanboy, have a gander at my PR rig, a Winnie Model 70 in McMillan HTG :

Again, this Model 70 barrel is from Gary Eakin of Bighorn Sales and his guidance was key in this build!
Lots of great talent in our community! Yahoooo! :)

Cheers and keep on helping them nooobs out there!

Nice project that's an extremely useful carbine TT. Switch bolt. .. dude that's gun nut. LOL
Having never really done anything with a 700 for no particular reason, I really need to do one just so some day there's so much 'stuff' for them your build bumps that thought yet again :)

I'm really a Winnie Model 70 lover, but the Remmy(ies) keep following me home for some reason. :) What's really neat about the switch barrel project is that many, many takeoff and used M700 barrels turn up on the EE Forum(s) for a decent price. So I will grab one (or two or three) and have it set up for this receiver and bolt.

So with the existing .22-250 bolt, by purchasing a .243 barrel, you can now expand this varmint rig into a deer gun for deer/rifle season. Then you can find another .308 or 7mm-08 barrel and you are into moose/rifle season. ALL done with the SAME bolt! That's why I'm running a pair of ARMS #22 rings and the same Leupold Mark4 duplex. I'm really pleased with the Remmy rifles, especially after the trigger recall has been done when I purchased the rifle from Ellwood Epps (board sponsor). :)

I suffer from being hyper active kid when I was in school. Today (retired high school teacher hat ON) one gets drugs for this affliction. I just got yelled at~

So when I get rifle ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), I just switch barrels. And I feel like I have a whole new caliber... I actually do. I've got a standard load for each caliber used for hunting purposes. All developed and tested at the bench.

For the .22-250, I'm running a Hornady 50 gr VMax boooolit with 31.0 gr WC735 ball powder from Higginson Powders.

For the .223, I'm running that same Hornady 50 gr VMax booolit with 23.5 gr WC735.

For the .308 barrel setup, I run a Hornady 150 gr SST, with 41.0 gr WC735. All of these bullet & powder combinations will group inside an inch if I do my part (which I happen to suck at the bench).

I love the ability to change barrels depending on the season. I can even run the .308 for the odd varmint shoot, but rather have the dedicated .22-250 barrel on there. In the spring or summer, I switch things over to the .223 for groundhogs and coyotes. :)

Cheers and keep on helping them nooobies around this community!

Really nice rifle! Just wondering why you chose two very ballistically similar chamberings?

A fabulous question. Most happy you asked. You see; I do have ADD or ADHD when it comes to rifles so I'm always tweaking or playing around, but I cannot afford too many receivers and then the optics for them..... In this case it's a Leupold Mark4 4.5 x 14 x 40mm LR/T Duplex. Nice glass, different calibers! Life is great!

So I find many barrels for M700 Remmy Short Action here on the EE Forum. I take them to a gunsmith who sets them up with the correct headspace gauges and now I have switch barrels for one receiver. My caliber choices are based on whatever M700 barrel I find for a great price right here in this community. What a great community we have right here! :)

Cheers!

Sweet! I have lately been gravitating towards these two calibres at the range. I have a Savage Model 12 (heavy barrel) in 223 and a Rem 700 (heavy barrel) in 22-250. Would love a set up like yours for the field. No idea it was possible.
By the way, I grew up in Georgian Bay myself. Family is still there. Great place! Congrats.

Now you realize (just don't wanna assume, eh?) that the .223 bolt accompanies the .223 barrel ? There, we got that out of the way. I bought the SA RH M700 action with the corresponding 0.473" bolt face (.243, .308, .22-250, .260) and then when I discovered a .223 bolt for a Remmy 700 here on the EE Forum, I knew it was a green light for the .223 project. :)

Yeah, this area is beautiful and if you gotta live in Ontario (I'm a Hongcouver boy) this is the place to be! :p

Cheers and keep on helping them nooobies out there!
