So I have this No4 Mk1 waiting for me at the post office and while I am waiting for the sun to come up so I can go get it I am trying to figure out a bit more about it. The serial # doesn't seem to fit into the conventional "letter prefix then 5 digit" profile. It is AG2###. Anyone know what I've got here?

Thanks again.

Post a pic.

It may have been an early serialed BSA shirley or Faz. Whats the year?

If its big lettering/numbering (approx 8-10mm) it may be an Indian guard rifle. I have a re serialized AL 2### rifle that I posted here with the big lettering. One explanation was that the rifle (formerly Long Branch-87L0###) was restamped when it went into service with the indian guard. Although no one was really certain. It did not have an ishy screw.

I will post pics after I pick it up today.

Ok, so I picked it up today. I'm thinking its a restored sporter possibly as it appears to be a bit of a mix master. Some Savage marked bits, some Faz marked stuff, some M's so I'm guessing Maltby and even what appears to possibly be a poorly struck LB on the bottom side of the butt socket. Some pieces are park'd, some are blued, some have suncorite I think. The wood looks to be NOS and is pretty nice. The serial # is over top of what appears to be the original "No4 Mk1" markings which are faint but appear to be electro pencil. Again thanks for your input in advance. Here come the pics:

That's been around the block. FTRM is Maltby ftr mark. I've only seen pictures of it befor. I don't think that's an LB mark under the butt socket. Just my opinion. I have a few LBs and have not seen a stamp there.

I'm going to suggest that when the rifle went thru the FTR is received a replacement receiver.

looks almost like a complete rebuild from the salvaged parts bins. I don't think that is a LongBranch receiver either.

So I finally got out to the range with the LE. Was a really nice day and had a great time. Here's some pics.

Shot a couple of groups:

So maybe you caught that there is 6 holes in the first group and 4 in the second. I had taken a peek through the spotting scope after my 4th shot in the second group and got pretty excited. So excited that when I put the final shot for the second string down range it put it into the first target. BAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! Oh well, I'm convinced that this No4 can shoot. Probably better than I can. ;)

Stand by for a restored Savage complete with another range report.

I think that is a mixmaster that was made in the UK after the war. I don't know if Charnwood made any 303 #4 rifles but it looks like something they might have made.

It's less of a mixmaster now. Robbed the Savage parts for a resto I was working on and replaced them with Faz stuff I had around. Now it's all Faz marked with the exception of the Maltby bolt face which most likely came at FTR. I think it's a more recent sporter restoration myself. The wood is really nice like NOS. It's a heck of a shooter and not hard on the eyes either.

So here's a nice Savage I put back into some nice furniture. The "mixmaster" above kindly relinquished a park'd Savage marked trigger guard and front band to help put this one back together. The forend is marked Faz but has a xxC###x Savage serial # stamped on it. I put NOS hand guards on it and gave the wood a drink of BLO. Bolt and receiver numbers match.

Checked the head space and took her to the range for a test fire. This beauty can shoot!! If it wasn't for the obligatory flier that I can't seem to do without she would have had a heck of a group.

Anyway, this beauty is up for sale in the EE, as much as I hate to see it go. Thanks again for looking!
