Montreal PD to get Gen 4 Glock 19s

Seems they will be retiring their current issued Walther P99 in QA (quick action) after 13 years of service in favor of the Glock 19 (Gen 4).

Given how some people have a harder time shooting Glocks due to the grip angle, I don't know if this is a good or bad thing necessarily.

And no, they will not have the barrel with the threads in order to make it FA legal. They will in essence be carrying a prohib, but they're exempt from the FA in any case.

The article says that the current 4,900 Walthers need to be overhauled (5 internal parts per pistol to be replaced) as well as having their sights replaced (which contains a radioactive element. I assume they mean Tritium). The process would be completed by 2017 and only last for 5 years until they would replace the Walthers in 2022. Or, probably for the same cost, they could just get the Glocks now. Deliveries start this year and the whole force should be on the G19s in 18 months.

interesting nonetheless. I hadn't heard that. I wonder how much different the shorter sight radius in the 19 will be to shoot? Honestly though, I agree with enefgee, just replace the walthers and scrap them for the price. Walthers are decent guns but expensive, and I hear the support isn't there for replacement parts. (could be wrong on that)
 
So in addition to the insidious and detestable grandfather clause the CFA administers creating two unequal classes of firearms owners, the Quebec government gets an exemption from the prohibited class rule to import G19's.
No new prohibited class civilian firearms can be entered into the firearm's registry, but it's okay for police & governments to do so?

Either the rules are equal for all citizens or those rules never see the light of day!

Police have always been able to import 12-6. no change there. bull@#$@ ain't it?

Seriously? Let's limit the police and military to 5 round belts and mags for our rifles and MGs

Give me a break.
 
Is this for real? After 13 years, 5 parts need to be replaced in every issued P99? Are the Montreal PD training much more with handguns than other PDs? I've read most officers in Canada put less than 200 rounds through their guns each year.

Also curious why the G19 for a whole department. Seems like the G17 would have been a better choice.

The P99 is somewhat fragile. As far as the G19 is concerned, it's one of the best all round handguns made, there isn't anything a G17 can do that a G19 can't, but a G19 works better for plain clothes work than a G17.
 
I know there were issues with the P99s when they were first rolled out. Stuff breaking and cracking and flying off into the Officer's faces, according to chatter at the range. Maybe the .40SW chambering had something to do with it, as the P99 was designed originally for a 9mm, IIRC. They appear to have ironed out those initial problems, but it isn't inconceivable that the little shooting they do get around to doing beats up the gun? That would explain parts needing to be replaced.

It could also be the parts need to be replaced due to age or manufacturer's suggested preventive maintenance? I'm just speculating.

I'm kinda wondering if it's at least partly due to manufacturer recomended maintenance. Government agencies have stringent vehicle maintenance schedules, I imagine firearms maintenance is probably just as stringent. When It gets more expensive to maintain than to buy new I'm all for the government making a sensible purchase of new equipment.

Actually, I think it was "firearm" or "sidearm".

You're quite right though. I'll have to try and find the podcast and re-hear it. If they did say "gun" on the air, I'll have to listen for the hyperventilating and inevitable high pitch screams of terror in the background....
