S&W 686 pre/post lock?

Using CFE pistol powder , hodgdonreloading is giving 1201 FPS as max load. In my Hornady manual the max +p is giving me 1050 FPS .

I assume you mean 1105fps? 105 seems a bit slow.
The .38spl will never come close to a max .357 load but it will put less " stress" on your gun. Like I said, it's only a compromise. Lighter loaded .357s will do the same trick. It's not like you need to cycle a slide or anything.

yes it was 1050. I just was wondering why such a diff between the two .

Shorter case, less powder. Are we talking same bullet too? The standard 158gr LRN in .38 or +P can't be compared to a full load 125gr .357 jHP. That was why I suggested the .38+P in the first place, as a tweener cartridge between the regular .38Spl and the full .357. Then a lightly loaded .357 would do the same trick.

I was gonna use the 125 plated for both. But I get what your saying now. I could use the hot 38 and get the same effect as a light 357. That sounds like a good idea. Then if I want I could put a few full load .357 through .

Good call!
When I suggested the +P load, it was because very few people shoot it. Most are either shooting standard .38 with 148 target wadcutters or 158gr lead SWC or LRN. A +P load would just be interesting to try, just because! LOL!
Your gun would handle it no problem too!
Have fun!
