I am official never buying Winchester 17hmr ammunition anymore. I bought 4 boxes of win 17hmr v-max 17grain and I'm tired of miss fires and split shells. Today I did a test with a box of 50. Out of the 50 rounds 7 misfired, 6 split shells and 1 didn't even want to chamber. The gun that was used was the savage r17 93. Even my buddy's CZ 455 had the same results. Honestly, it should be illegal for Winchester to keep selling this ammo because sooner or later someone is going to eject the round that has misfired, and it is going to shrapnel all over. Don't get me wrong, when the ammo works they are very accurate and powerful. I know that CCI and win 17hmr are made in the same factory, but why is it that the CCI's .17hmr shells don't split? I do get the odd misfire with CCI, but not as much as the Winchester. Even with .22lr, Winchesters primers are crappy.

Did your buddy with the CZ had split necks too?
My Savage used to split 1 outa 5 shells, My CZ never does.

Misfires are another thing tho.

lots of threads on this same subject, I sent a case of win ammo to winchester?olin, along with a handful of split casings, they sent me enough gift certificates to cover double the cost of the ammo I sent in. They also paid to have my gun sent to a smith for inspection...no damage was done to the rifle. its a well known issue with winchester 17 hmr, I haven't heard if the Win supremes split, but the regular do. the splitting won't hurt anything, other than make it a tad tough to eject a round now and then.

I've put a couple boxes of Supreme's through my 455 without issue, and by far the most accurate rounds I've purchased. The regular Winchesters would have misfires but I could get them to fire by waiting a bit and turning the shell in the chamber, the second strike would usually set it off. Also the least accurate of all the brands/loads I've tried (Hornady, Federal, CCI, Winchester in 15/17/20GR.)

Sorry, should have made it clearer. He did not have split necks with his cz, but misfires.

That's what thought, Savage has a looser chamber, and the HMR rounds are sensitive on the neck portion of the cases.
Maybe the Winchester are even more sensitive in that area.

I gave up on the Winchester stuff because it was the least consistent and least accurate with my rifles. Never had any splitting or misfire issues while I used any of it though.

CCI, Hornady and Remington all seem to do quite well though, with CCI being the slight winner.

I don't recall ever actually having a misfire with 17HMR of any brand.....

I have never used Winchester .17HMR. I guess I will never use it after reading some posts here. CCI & Federal are in abundance in Edmonton where ever you go, so there's no supply issue to staying away from them.

I was thinking of getting a .17 because its like .22 on steroids shooting faster flatter and further accurately also every store I look at is out of .22 but has stacks of .17 hmr ammo.

.17 HMR CZ 455 with yodave trigger kit

Win = 1/2" to 3/4" group @ 100yds
Win = split cases

CCI = 3/8" to 5/8" group @ 100yds
CCI = NO split cases

I can't recall ever having a misfire with either ammo.
I've used about 1000 of each.
