I'm looking to buy a new bushnell elite 3200 3-9x40 for 200$ from a friend and I need to know if this is a good price or should I look somewhere else. The scope was never used but I know it's obsolete so I'm not too sure if price is fair.

I have a savage axis that came with a scope and everyone told me to replace it. Is the original scope that bad?

forgive my ignorance but what an expensive scope can do and cheap one can't?
I guess you always get what you pay but I don't know too much about scopes.

the rain-x lens coating really does work in wet weather. They are most likely never gonna fail you unless you mount it on a 50BMG. The adjustments work. The housing is tough. And they just plain work. I have 3 on various rifles. I also own Leupolds and Redfields, plus 2 Burris scopes. The 3200 is very competitive with all of them. (and probably the least tough on your wallet)

Better glass lenses are the biggest improvement as you get into the better scopes, as well as better overall materials.

If you bought the Savage Axis new with that scope as part of a factory package, it might work well for a long time or it might go bad soon. You don't know until your try.

Bushnell's line includes some scopes like that, built down to a price point even if it means quality suffers, and some built to a quality standard even if it means they cost more and must sell for more. The Bushnell Elite series is in the latter category and the 3200 is at the lower end of that Elite line but it is good value.

I had a 3200 in 2-9x40...
Bought it new...
First trip in the bush it fogged up.
They went good for it- no problem there (or so the new owner told me).
For 200 I think I'd rather find a couple more nickels and get a new Redfield.

Seriously. The Elite 3200 is at least 3 years old and brand new they were 260 bucks. The newer and much improved Elite which replaced the old Elite 3200 can regularly be had for the same 260 bucks as the old Elite 3200. In a nutshell...pass.
