newbie question. which powder would be the cleanest with a reasonable price(not asking for cheapest as I think you get what you pay for?).

I will be reloading 9/40/45 first. then later 38spl/357mag/44spl/44mag. And I have been shooting TMJ/FMJ only if that matters.

Thanks

CFE pistol works well for me. Very clean as long as you get reasonable pressure and relatively cheap ($28/lb)...at least where I get mine.

Clean is Clays for me, low charge weights which means it's economical, but it's more application specific due to the fast speed and low velocity....works good for me in .45acp and .38spl.
For more versatile, HS6 works well in 9mm up to .45acp with all bullet loads, and delivers high enough velocity. You can use it in .357mag but don't expect top velocity. It's not super clean, but not super dirty either....middle of the road.

Thanks. Looks like everyone likes Hodgdon. I will try these 3 to see how it works fine my guns. what happens to Winchester 231, if we can find it.

that's why it's always good to plan way head of time while I still have 5000 rounds ammo as buffer until something reasonably priced comes along. :)

You'll be lucky just to find something reasonably priced.

Vihtavuori powders have a solid reputation for cleanliness and my experience agrees. They are not cheap though. I have 4lbs of 231 I got for $50 through Facebook. I have yet to use it because I have heard through several sources that it's very dirty.

yes. vihtavuori N350 is like $55/LB before tax and shipping @ one place I saw. it looks to be a good powder that can be used to load all the handgun calibers I play above. So, it's an option.

I found CFE pistol and .223 for a good price, haven't used it yet, but I have heard it was good. Perhaps someone else can chime in with more experience as it's a new product of 14'

CFE stands for "Copper Fouling Eraser" so I'd hope it's a clean powder! I passed on the canisters I have seen as the velocity it produces is definitely on the low end for the cartridges I shoot.

Yes, I know - company's say a lot of things, many of which are untrue. 3317 FPS isn't fast enough for you?

CFE pistol is not a powder that gives top velocities for the cartridges I handload. The rifle stuff may but I haven't cared enough to research.

Meters well, shoots good. ( CFE Pistol ) but as I mentioned earlier, it's dirty for me so far. It will have to be loaded at max to clean up I assume.
