Zastava 7.62x39 M85?

Which is pretty much all surplus. Damn.

Hard extraction, not impossible. And not all the time. Sometimes you just need to put more oomph into opening the bolt. Once rotated open, the round has been drawn far enough back (a fraction of an inch), that the rest of the extraction process goes fine.

We're not talking the "Mosin Bolt 2x4 solution" type of hard extraction.

On the Manlicher (Stutzen) stock, it has a significant cheek swell. It's more suited to scoping than firing with open sights.

That generally has a lot to do with how your face is constructed. One guy will have no problem using a given stock and another guy may not be able to see the sights correctly or through the scope.

I have one I picked up on a trade, came with the 1 piece scope mount with attached 1'' rings. I mounted up an old Bushnell 1.5x4.5x20 Bushnell on it last night and will take it out next time I head out to the range or the gravel pits. Here it is.

I will report how it shoots once I get out and put some rounds through her.

That older Bushnell scope looks good on that rifle. Should make for a good shooting unit. Interested in how it shoots as well...

Got my rifle the other day. Looks good so far. Haven't hit the range yet though. I can't get Weaver two piece bases from my local shop. I've tried the only two other online places that I know of. Anybody know where I could order some Weaver bases? Numbers 71a and 23 in case anyone else is looking. Thanks guys, Toni.

I owned one for about a year. Zastava M85 in 7.62x39.

It's not designed to fire surplus ammunition. The lacquer cases cause hard extraction and it definitely wears on the extractor. You do get light strikes with surplus and the accuracy isn't very good. The number of light strikes depends on the rifle you get, I've read mixed reports.

The cheapest ammo you're going to want to put through this is American Eagle or MFS.

Fit and finish is a mixed bag.

I am really interested in these rifles but I can't decide between the Stutzen model or the Sporter. Will the full length stock have any impact on accuracy?

gun is excellent got it mounted with a 6x24x50 have yet to have a misfire after 100s of surplus rounds and never had a hard extraction myself shooting Romanian surplus

personal preference but I do not like the stock iron sights

Actually I believe that the new ones imported through the Canadian importer have bee redesigned to fire surplus and the ones that come in via the US by one of the site sponsors have not been. I wanted one of them because he brought in some LH ones however he is all sold out so I bought a full stock rh versions that has been updated for surplus. I never intend to fire surplus and could get along with a lighter striker fall and the original extractor however I do like the FS model. Have to find out if it is a shooter or not.

Got one of the $429 deals from CanAm....it's a $429 gun barely....not worth $600+ that some dealers are selling them for. For $600+ you would be retarded to buy one of these over a CZ. I have Zastava rimfires and they are pretty decent value....the M85, not really on par.
The best way to describe the action is "Norinco smooth".....and the finish on the wood appears to have been applied with a scotch brite pad. Trigger adjustments are crap, if I lower sear engagement and spring weight to anything decent the safety doesn't work. And yes I know what all 4 adjustments are for, trigger is just crap and now I'm on the hunt for a Timney.

It's really how rough and sloppy the action is that disappoints me the most. It's the kind of thing that should be redesigned...
I found the mossberg MVP to be far worse than the 85 in rough and sloppy bolt but it seems to get a lot of praise even though it is borderline unuseable. You can use some polishing compound to smooth the 85 out some but it will always wiggle, I sold the MVP at a loss as there really was no solution or help for it.

Timney is about $75US. It's really how rough and sloppy the action is that disappoints me the most. It's the kind of thing that should be redesigned...

Why would you buy a Timney trigger for it? The M85 has a fully adjustable trigger out of the box.

I think they could make this little gun a winner by ditching the whole mini Mauser marketing concept as the only thing Mauser-like is the ejector box.
Make a round receiver with traditional bolt/ejector/extractor, Winchester style safety, would simplify manufacturing and improve the functioning. I think there is a market for these lightweight mini-actions as it is a handy little rifle.

Try reading my post.....6 posts up.

I did read you post, and still not sure why you bothered. Maybe it's just a difference between one rifle off the factory and another. I had some issues getting the safety to engage properly after adjusting the trigger, but time and patience solved it. I just had to work back ad forth with the safety engagement screw to find the sweet spot.

In the end, I ended up with a no takeup, crisp 3lb pull, with very limited overtravel. And the safety works. It took about 1/2 hour of fiddling back and forth to get it where I wanted it.

Anyway, to each their own.
