Turkey Gun

It's not "legal".

You must use a shotgun of "not less than" 20 gauge and "not greater than" 10 gauge and must use #4, 5 or 6 shot.

Thanks Galamb. Have not done my hunting course yet, but we bought some land and there is a lot of turkey and deer there. Do you know if they are at least thinking about turkey hunting with air rifles in Canada?
Take care and thanks one more time for your help.

Turkey hunting is definitely growing in Ontario.

The first season was in 1987 and back then you could take one bird (bearded), in the spring hunt and you could only hunt from 1/2 hour before sunrise until noon. If you got a bird you had to take it into a "check station".

Less than 20 years later there is a spring hunt, from 1/2 hour before sunrise until 7 pm, and you can take 2 bearded Turkey (but only one on a given day), plus in the fall hunt you can take a bearded or un-bearded Turkey.

Great improvements as the hunt is growing.

However, they have remained stuck on the firearms allowed.

Only the shotguns/loads that I previously mentioned or bow/crossbow with applicable regulations on the draw weight/arrow length/broadhead measurements.

I would dearly love to use one of my smaller caliber black powder rifles, but as of right now, I have not heard of any (expansion) to the weapons they allow or will allow in the future.

Complete the hunting + turkey courses and you will likely be ready for both deer and (again) turkey as Fall approaches. This is of course assuming that you already have a PAL.

A 20ga shotgun equipped with proper choke will serve well for Turkey. Add a 20ga rifled barrel slug gun or an in-line muzzloading rifle and you will also be adequately equipped to hunt Whitetails on your property.

Thanks Ahsan. For deer I have my trusty savage in 308W, and a M305, that can be used.
Really need to complete my hunter education and bring a decent shotgun to the family.
Thinking about an OVER and UNDER in 20 Gauge.
Anyway thanks for your time .

Although 308 is perfectly adequate for deer, be sure to check what is legal for deer hunting in your WMU. Mine is shotgun, black powder and archery only, you can't hunt with centerfire rifles until at least Owen Sound.

Back on subject, single shot 12 gauge with screw in chokes or fixed full chokes gets you in the game for cheap. Last spring my buddy got his first jake with a $65 12 gauge Cooey, just goes to show that you don't have to spend thousands to be successful.

They may be cheap but they may not go bang every time. Their sxs guns seem to function better than their ou guns

Any legal shotgun can work if you hunt within its effective range. Best of luck

Why would anyone in their right mind want to risk crippling an outstanding game bird like a turkey with an air rifle. The advantage of a rifle is for distance. An air rifle doesn't fill the bill.

There are many powerful air guns on the market in many calibers. I have a friend state side who shoots deer and boar with 35 and 45 caliber airguns.
Any pcp 22 or 25 caliber air gun will certainly and cleanly put down a turkey under 100 yards
However its not legal here in Ontario. Be careful not to paint all airguns with the same brush

Personally I'd love to use rimfire guns for both spring and fall turkey

I have taken quite a few turkeys with a Cooey 12g that I got for $50. You don't need more than 1 shot for turkeys. If you miss with the first one they are so fast that you don't usually have time for a second one.

I do believe this is the standard equipment for Alberta too. I would guess that Manitoba only allows similar shotguns as well. But I'm not 110% sure.
Seems I vaguely remember something about BC allowing rimfire rifles for this, in specific hunting zones only. Otherwise 20-10 gauge shotguns and certain birdshot only.

I don't personally know of any province or territory in Canada that allows air rifles and certainly not any centrefire rifles for this task.

22 calibre air rifle at 1200 fps will kill a turkey no problem. Some places allow rimfire and I'd suggest they'd be compatible at closer ranges.

However, they have remained stuck on the firearms allowed.

They are also stuck on load technology. Plenty of guys killing birds with heavier-than-lead loads out of smaller gauge guns. I've seen guys in the USA using a 410 Yildiz with a red dot and custom choke added to the barrel. They are loading TSS but that gun is around 3 lbs and with TSS you can easily be lethal at 40-50 yards.

I'm a seasoned turkey hunter and a long time small game/varmint/predator airgunner... I can assure you airguns are more than capable of cleanly harvesting turkeys.... even my .20 Sheridan rifles firing a 16 grain pellet at 650 fps can do more damage than most would believe... I have cleanly harvested dozens of racooms and foxes with them... the pellets are usually complete pass throughs on head shots... they would easily blow right through a turkeys head... and these multi-pump pneumatic rifles are in the low end of the power range for what we shoot... our PCP's have three and four times that energy and are capable of dime-sized groups at 50 yards... I would love to have the legal opportunity to take an air rifle gobbler.

Yup, air rifles aren't your grandpas break open single pump. They sure have come a long way.

Hi mr. My neighbor sold me his old Stevens shotguns SxS 12 gauge in 2 3/4". Is a very solid shotgun, no rust or cracks. Do you know if a shotgun like that, made in the fifties is safe to shot modern loads?
Stevens 12 gauge SxS model 5100, belive was made in 1956.

This is very much similar to asking the condition about someone's friend of a friend's Volvo, rumored to be parked in a third cousin's garage, on a rural property near Westlock.

Hoyt. I have a 20 cal sheriden as well. Love it. 8 pumps gets me 720 fps on my chrony not sure of pellet weight. I was using the yellow plastic box Benjamins.
I am considering a condor or the new one from airforce. The name however eludes me right now. It was featured in the latest X treme predator mag
