Hi all,

There is a Inglis Hi Power down here (australia) for $1375 aud which is $1664 Canadian. Just wanting to know if it's worth the money and if there is anything out of place or things I should be looking for. There is Matching serials on the slide and frame but not the barrel. Does this hurt collectors value?

It is a 0T serial, any ideas where this one would of ended up? eg British military etc

I was told to come here to get the info, cheers!

James

Dang, I just realized i can't upload pics. If someone knowledgeable could PM me their email i can send pics of the gun. Would be very much appeciated on any info or advice.

Thanks.

The serial number should be engraved on the slide, frame over the park so it shows bright metal underneath and the barrel will also be engraved with the serial number to be seen thru the slide when closed and there is a hand tooled crossed flag cypher above the barrel serial number
Chinese contract will have tangent sight and CH prefix in serial number
The mk2 will have fixed sights and the serial number starts with a single number before the "T" like yours
The Tango series are valued higher than the CH series if condition is same
Others who know more than me can offer more details but a non original barrel will pull the value back under $1k in my opinion
Unmarked barrels were usually armourer replacements as are unmarked slides

Good news is that the exchange on $1375 Aus $ is only $1314 Cdn. Our dollar is actually slightly stronger than yours at present. The replacement barrel will hurt the value somewhat. Quite frankly, in the Canadian market, one would expect a very very nice Inglis for $1314.

The 0T number represents 10,000 pistols, which could be found just about anywhere in the free world. There is very little in the way to trace individual pistols history. One of the best publications on these is the Inglis Diamond by Clive Law. It will give you just about everything you could want to know about the design, production, and distribution of the Inglis Hipower.

It looks like a $600 CDN pistol to me, but I have no idea what it is worth in Australia. It is hard to tell from these low resolution pictures, but I see what appears to be a lot of pitting or similar damage that has been refinished. I also don't see the expected markings on the frame and slide, and as already mentioned, a replacement barrel.

An original 0T Inglis for comparison:

OT is a very early Inglis serial number. I have a 1T and it is early as well. I don't know how high the prefixes go but I have seen everything up to 9T. Your pistol is the first 0T I have seen.

That being said, your pistol has been refinished and of course the barrel isn't original to the pistol. Changed out barrels are not at all unusual. My 1T has a commercial Belgium made replacement that I have been told is not unusual as the spares for the Inglis HiPowers have run out. The original replacement barrels will usually be marked with crossed flags or maybe something else but un numbered.

IMHO the $600 figure is on the low side. I would say at least $750 if the internals of the pistol are very good or better. Even with the replacement barrel. I saw a bunch of ex UK P35 Inglis Hi Powers that came into Lever Arms back in the late sixties. Almost all of them had after market commercial Belgian made replacement barrels. They were in good mechanical condition other than the slide and frame ways were well worn. I have no idea how many thousand rounds those pistols had through them as they rattled like a child's toy after cleaning out the grease they had been dipped in. They still shot very close to point of aim at 25 yards though and the barrels locked up tightly when in battery.

Unless those pistols are very rare in Australia, the asking price on that pistol is to high again, IMHO. Make a reasonable to you offer. Likely there will be a counter offer and you can meet at a desirable figure for both of you.

TEG, that is a nice clean 0T. Has it been reparked??? I wonder if it made it to Holland or Normandy??

Thanks bh, If you follow the link in my post, above, there is some interesting info about this pistol and the finish/refinish (see posts # 8 & 10 by Steve1987).
Here it is with its 5T partner:
