Hey 1911'rs,
I bought a nice Sig 1911R 45 acp a month ago from a CGN'r and it came with 5 mags. Two of them are 10 round Pro-Mags", soooo aftermarket. I was out at the range last weekend and I found they weren't performing well with my Sig. My number 1 complaint with them is that I loaded 11 rounds in one (by mistake I may add), and when I went to insert the mag, it wouldn't seat (yes I know only 10 rounds, I lost count when I was loading ok? :p). So I figured it out, removed the mag, I had to pull it out because it wouldn't "fall out" like the stainless mags that come with the Sig from factory. I then loaded it again and proceeded to shoot it. One of the rounds jammed (I guess you call it stovepipe. it was facing upward in the action) and the casing was sheared badly, enough that the base of the bullet was showing. I ejected it and continued to finish the mag. After that I just put it away and grabbed my Ruger 22 mkii and just plinked the afternoon away n went home. BTW I was shooting Remington UMC 230 grain fmj.

Anyway, my question is would the Wilson Combat 45 acp 10 round mags be "better" for my Sig? I was watching a youtube vid Larry Vickers and Ken Hackathorn talking about mags. They were saying pretty much that barring any actual malfunctions with your gun per se, MOST problems with feeding is largely due in part to poor magazine quality, worn out (excess usage). you know, that sort of thing....is there ANY validity to these statements?

So I'm considering buying a few Wilson Combat 45 acp 10 round mags from Wanstalls. They have them @ $ 52 cdn (shipping xtra of course)
So what do you guys think?
Is it worth it?
More importantly, is anyone running WC mags in their 1911's (any make or model)?
Is anyone having any problems running them in their 1911?

Thanks in advance guys, I value anyone's input and advice
Mike

anything Pro Mag is usually garbage. get the #47 7 round, #47D 8 round, or the 8 round Elite Tactical mags from Wilson Combat.

I'd stay away from the 10 rounders unless you really need those extra two rounds

I've tried them all and Wilson Combat mags are the only ones I can trust to work right out of the package. I like Chip McCormick power mag bodies but hate their tilting followers

ACT mag works good too but I don't like the base pads

K thanx G, I'll do the WC 8 rounders. 10 rounders weren't the deal breaker. I guess when your used to shooting 10 rounders with my Sig 226 9mm, it's hard to go down to 8......know what I mean ;)

I've used both wilson and shooting star with never an issue. They are the only two brands i will purchase for 1911. 8 rounders look better and generally work better as well.

If your gun won't run with Wilson 7 or 8 round magazines, there is probably something wrong with the gun. Any sort 10 round, .45 ACP 1911 magazine is inherently iffy for functioning.

Chip McCormick Power Mags and Tripp Cobra Mags are also good choices.

I've got six WC 8rnd mags and zero failures. For 10rnd mags, I've only got Chip McCormick ones and zero failures so far. All drop free in my Sig 1911 Target.

when I got my SR1911, it came with 5 factory mags which are very good without any problem. 1 8RD and 4 7RDs. Since I like to equip all my guns with enough mags to load 50 ammo(1 box) at once, I sold all my 7RDs to a CGNer here, and bought 4x47D(8 RD) and 1x47T(10RD) from brownells(don't want all 10RD as it sticks out of the mag well too long to my liking). I couldn't be happier. very easy to load, drop free and the follower are closed. worth every penny. the only minor thing is the 10RD doesn't come with the plastic base, just stainless steel stick out which doesn't look as nice as chip mccormick, but not a deal breaker. the 10RD one is more expensive than the chip mccormick ones, but has perfect customer review on brownells compared to chip mccormick. so I went with Wilson. and warranty wise, CMC is 3 years for the power & power+ mags. Wilson says on the web site: "No-Risk Service Policy - If It Breaks from Normal Use, We Replace It!" Does it mean life time warranty?

If you buy from brownells, make sure your order is lower than c$100 and ship via USPS. that way, no tax or custom fee. I split my order into 2 and paid extra US$10 for shipping, but still cheaper than paying custom and ontario tax. :)

Wow thanx for the tip man ! ! So how come you didn't just go with Wanstalls? Since they sell Wilson Combat....Why go to the hassle of doing Brownells in the US?

@ Luckey, Hey man, sooooo what then, if you know, is the the difference between the 47D 8 rnd, and the 50O Elite Tactical mags? Saw them at the Wilson Combat site. Its like only a 4-5 $ diff...thoughts?
And if I decided to go with the 50O's @ 2, it would still be under the $100 limit for that US Customs rape you were talking about.

the elite tactical mags are supposed to be better built. they moved the witness holes further back for more strength and made the tube slightly longer for less stress on the spring, added a bigger base pad for easier removal in a jam. I think the spring might be stronger too.....can't remember. the base pad has number you can fill in so you can number your mags too.

they're built like a tank....but I've never had any problems with #47 or #47D mags. I personally prefer the #47 7 round mags. the springs don't lose their tension as much as the #47 8 rounders because they don't fully compress as much.

I think there's an even better Wilson combat mag with an even stronger spring that's square, not round and lower profile base pad. I think it sticks out the bottom more.

I can't keep up with all their mags any more. they also sell the economy mags that are just regular thickness and regular springs, no removable base pad, regular follower

Well, I had the exact same question at the time. So I did call the customer service @ Wilson combat to find out. the only thing they can tell me was that "it was a different and better metal". Well, since 47D&T are already life time warranty with aircraft grade metal, how much better I really want them to be in all reality? so, a dollar saved is a dollar for more ammo. that's why I didn't bother to go with the 500. Like I said, 47D&T have 100% positive review almost everywhere, so, the question is, are you really looking for 120% reliability here and does it really mean anything? :) Having said that, both the 47 & 500 series should be excellent products and you won't regret buying either. Just go for what you like. You will be happy.

Same reason. 13% tax vs extra US$10 shipping. Aren't we paying enough tax already? At least in Ontario, Liberal keeps raising tax under different names. I will try my best to avoid some while I can. There are many online shops, like B&H etc, offers great price and frees shipping for Canadians so that when the goods arrive at my door steps, it's still cheaper than I buy in store in Ontario.

Hey Luckey, I tried to find this "B&H" you mentioned....all I got was a B&H in the states that only sells to law enforcement emt's etc... CAn you give me the exact name of this place? Wonder if they still have that free ship to canucks :)

www.bhphotovideo.com or bandh.com. It's just an example for something I buy, like camera stuff. the only thing related to firearm is the pelican case, even with shipping(order over US$99 is free), custom and tax in, still cheaper than I buy it in toronto.
