Is this safe to shoot?

Flashman, thank you for posting the pic and the associated background story. Very intriguing and thank you for your service. So many war relics we wish could talk but you spoke for a part of this peculiar cartridge's story. :)

Should be safe to shoot!

Was a common occurrence during the cold war, Covert "Charlie Wilson's War" Egyptian made .303 ammo also had this same treatment in Afghanistan -

There was a large amount of both surplus 303 and new production 303 shipped to Afghanistan during the Russian war. At least some of it came from Canada, there was also a large production run of 303 made at Winchester's plants. Given the atmosphere at the time, it doesn't surprise me that they'd obscure the origin of the ammo.

What's confusing about this whole thread is how you first state that you bought it off Something at a gunshow and then later state it somehow transpires that you got it for free off a ANA comrade in Afghanistan and that you were not smart enough to get side pictures of it! Do you have it or not! What's going on here! Is there any other version of it's background that you care to share! why does the story keep changing? Are you afraid the CIA will want it back and track you down for it?

Maybe he bought at a gunshow in Afghanistan, from an ANA buddy, while he was there serving with the Special Forces.

I dunno why, but that instantly made me think of one of the best bits in Old School...

"What's going on?????"

:d:d:d Loosen the tinfoil hat, deep breaths. I thought it'd be amusing to pitch the story that way. I figured folks would see right through the jesting, it's so very clearly a goofy question - up there with planning to take multiple .338 hits to the back - and also so very clearly resting on a desert tan truck.

But CGN never fails to impress! I guess I should have known there was a significant danger it'd sail over some heads. I apologize that my attempt at humour confused and distressed you; truly it wasn't my intent. Thank GOD I didn't post pics of us cleaning AKs with a humorous description; I suspect in that case I'd be making the INSET guys a coffee this morning.

No, I don't have it, it was but one of many many many interesting items over there. It got pitched immediately after taking the pic. There's also a fairly dim view taken of bringing live ammo back on service flights LOL.

For clarity, I also wrote of something not off something. The difference is often easy to distinguish, as there is precisely one more f in off.

For absolute and utter clarity; the description in the first post is a complete and total joke. The rest is completely and totally the real story. I had figured the clarification would be sufficient; again, CGN never does fail to impress sometimes.

I have learned my lesson.

Uh, that's the Very Special Forces, thank you very much. http://www.theonion.com/article/clinton-deploys-very-special-forces-to-iraq-645

This sentence alone tells it all. Anybody that has ever been on a CF base would know why a amnesty box sits on a post and why it's there in the first place.

We had an amnesty hole. It was surrounded by hesco. I tried to never, ever look inside because I didn't want to see.

The only thing that really worried me were the PG-7V warheads with the nose cones all corroded through... The only thing that worried me more was the Afghan insistence they were just fine, in fact they improve with age. How much damage can a piezo - electric fuse take before it gives up? GREAT question.

I get it now!, so in future when you post on CGN we will all have to assume there is at least a 50% chance that you are making some of your post up to pitch an amusing story!

And so glad we lived up to your expectations and didnt fail to impress you when we question your inconsistent posts!

flashman thank you
its been a long week and I havent laughed that hard in a while, read through the very special forces link and my wife came down stairs wondering why I was laughing like a little girl in tears... that was hard to read while laughing so damn hard!
cheers, Ash

With practice, I'm sure you'll be able to discern humour from seriousness, and you won't have to just rely on probability.

I guess we all see what we want to see; some see it for what it is, some see a nefarious conspiracy that needs debunking.

In my defence too, I'd just worked a 21 hour day, flew in from Victoria, and am getting over the flu. I'm not saying it was the NyQuil, but it was the NyQuil.

No problem, But we have another forum thread for off topic posts!
I guess we can now add drugs to the list too! :onCrack:
